Renalto Sobral was deservedly banned for holding onto a choke for two long after a fighter had already lost a large amount of blood from the head. Barnett left the UFC in disgrace after testing positive for steroids. As for the monopoly part? Aren't you American? Why do you think American Football has done so well? because the NFL is a monopoly and forces the best teams to play one another. Big deal about favoritism, alot of those fighters are favoured deservedly, boxing does exactly the same.
American Football hasn't done well because its a monopoly. Its a monopoly because its done well. Its really a misnomer to call the NFL a monopoly anyway since there are other football leagues, most notably the AFL. Also, as a company its teams are franchise that engage in revenue sharing. This makes every team viable and profitable. You can't compare the business of American Football with that of the UFC. That being said, there is no doubt Dana as done great things. The question remains is he the best person to take it to the next level. His lack of polish may eventually become an issue. He has the aire of a used car salesman.
OMG are you serious? Its been said time and again, Sobral is not the first one to do that in UFC but he is the first one to get banned for it. Thats favoritism for you. You think its fair do you? Cause you are not sympathetic enough to imagine yourself in his shoes. Barnett was proved to have been falsly accused. Not saying he wasn't taking steroids but when he got banned as far as i remember they recently proved him to be innocent in that case. WTF with comparing NFL with combat sports? Why people keep trying to do that? If you're gona do it do it ****ing right. NFL is monopoly in the "world" just like Cricket is monopoly. No one gives a **** about those sports outside of America and England respectively. You want monopoly because you're not a fighter. In monopoly the viewer wins the fighter gets ****ed. Favoritism is again, easy for you to say "big deal". Well, it IS a big deal. Again, fighters get ****ed.
I want a monopoly because I want to see the best fighters actually fight. Forgive me for wanting to see that! Oh, and say cricket is only popular in England to Australians and 1 billion Indians where Cricket is the 2nd and 1st most popular sports in those two respective countries. I'm not American so I'm not totally aware of the NFL situation just trying to relate to something that poster may know about. Sobral's case was the worst of its kind for a long time and he was fined, MMA doesn't need that showcased and used by MMA-haters as a weapon to ban the sport. And I would love to see your evidence to show Barnett was innocent.
In a monopoly everyone loses except for the owner. Monopoly within the United States when there is more potential outside the United States, than actually inside it, is what the problem is.. How many martial arts have been created within the U.S.? More importantly, how many masters are in the U.S.? Sure, MMA is its own category of fighting, but offshoots of other disciplines that have conformed to MMA are what has created the best fighters.. Most guys start off as wrestlers, Sambo practitioners, BJJ blackbelts, Judo Blackbelts, or kickboxers.. Only thing the U.S. has going for it, home grown wise are wrestlers. The disciplines are actually mostly from other countries. The potential for great fighters outside the U.S. is extremely good, which makes this an international platform. Not just an American one, where the NFL recruits 99% of its players from American Colleges and Universities.. MMA gets it talent from all over the world. To not tap into that talent pool is selling short of the potential.
Okay if there isn't a monopoly in the MMA world how will we get to see all the best fighters fight one another and not have eveything split apart and disjointed like boxing is now?
Ok, cricket was a bad example lol. Just like nfl . Anyways, NFL is a monopoly(which someone mentioned really is a misnomer) because outside of US it is just not popular. I remember a thread about barnett being inocent but dont feel like looking for it. Yea, sure I wanna see those fights. But like i said, the viewer wins, the fighters get ****ed over. Sobral's case was perhaps the worst but not by much. There's no defined line other than you have to obey the refs orders. In case of Sobral or Penn they disobeyed.
Popular in Japan, and I'm sure it would be popular in Russia.. Problem is Russians, to my knowledge arent going to, or don't value entertainment dollar wise as we do here in the states.. Not everyone in the world is willing to lay down the equivalent of 40-50 bucks to see their favorite fighter. Thing is, we shouldn't need to have to pay that much money in order for fighters to get paid millions of dollars, but if you look at the market as a global one, instead of just an American one there is much potential.. I don't think there has been a sport that has the potential, and the following from within the U.S. that can go global other than boxing. But, it must go this way because there are only so many fighters the UFC will be able to put on top cards, unless their cards are going to be 12 hours long and monthly.
There is no monopoly, there is not even an oligopoly, it is a business with an incredibly low barrier to entry, and there are probably over 100 different orgs in the US alone. The UFC being the biggest does not make them a monopoly.
Monopoly, if ment exactly what it means, would be the end of MMA. A leading organisation though, is a good thing. I think Dana would have been replaced already if it weren't for the fact that a lot of fans "knows" him, he is UFCs face to the public, and replacing him with someone that might be crappier is taking a huge risk because people want to get to know UFC and MMA. Personally I think Dana is an idiot. For his several idiotic statements in TUF about the fighters "not being tough enough" when they're injured etc etc..
