    Who could ever forget the Roy Jones Jnr (USA) vs Park Si-Hun (South Korea) result at the Seoul Olympics? Apparently the computer recorded the American outpunching the South Korean, 86-32! Jones also forced a standing 8 count in the second round. But the South Korean got the decision!

    Makes some of the scoring inconsistencies that we are seeing in Beijing pale by comparison (so far!).

    Jones is the reason the scoring system changed.

    knock your opponent out and you don't have to worry about it.

    Knocking out opponents is a lot harder to accomplish when they are wearing head gear.

    Yeah. The Koreans thought they got hosed in LA and told one of the American officials "just wait, in 4 years it's in our country."

    They tried to do it to every American boxer they could, especially when they faced a Korean.

    Makes a lot of sense really, and sadly!

    Sometimes it's the making of a sportsman when he gets ripped off (eg Roy Jones Jnr & Jeff Fenech). Other times it might actually stuff a bloke's whole career.

    True.

    And that makes Lennox Lewis 58 KOs in 75 amateur wins, all the more impressive !

    I have seen some of the boxing matches in this yrs olympics, and the scoring is freakin terrible. I seen fighters land clear punches 2 the head an d body and dont get rewarded the point. Idk wtf is going on wit that

    Not true, as that scoring system was in the works for quite some time before the Seoul Olympics, and plans had already been made to use it before Roy even fought the gold medal bout against the Korean in '88.

    Here's a quote from the then president of the AIBA, Anwar Chowdhry, on Sept 27th, 1988, and printed in various sources the next day;

    "At our world championships in Moscow, in September, 1989, we will introduce electronic scoring. Each judge will have two buttons in front of him, each respresentaing a boxer. For each scoring blow, a judge will push a button, and that punch will be shown on the scoreboard next to the judge's number. For the first time in boxing, the public will see blow-by-blow scoring" - Chowdhry's quote, as printed in various sources, with this one taken directly from the Los Angeles Times, Sept 28th, 1988

    So unless Chowdhry had some kind of psychic ability that enabled him to see into the future, the robbery of Roy Jones, which didn't happen until a few days after that announcment (Oct 1st, I believe it was...maybe Oct 2nd), had nothing to do with the change in amateur boxing's scoring system.

    Some of the American fighters also benefitted from the jury system that they had in place during the 1984 Games, and a couple that come to memory right quickly are Virgill Hill vs. Moses Mwaba, which was originally awarded to Mwaba by a 3-2 vote, and then overturned to a victory for Hill.

    Also, one of the most blatant "hometown" robberies during international boxing during the crazy eighties happened when Angelo Musone of Italy was originally awarded a 3-2 decision over the American, Henry Tillman (even that was puzzling because Musone dominated, winning at least one of the first two, before having a really big third round where he thumped Tillman pretty good), only to see the decision overturned by the jury to a Tillman "win", which caused the L.A. Sports Arena crowd to loudly boo both the verdict and the hometown (literally hometown, as Tillman was from L.A.) fighter who benefitted from the horrible decision. It's also the decision that the American president of the AIBA, Colonel Don Hull, called "shocking" and "suprising" amongst other things.

    The difference now is that they are ****ing the favorites over in the prelims and semis rather than the finals. They know what they are doing...
