I hate panama as much as the next guy but he is not resopinsible for Collins' death. Collins was still a healthy man that could have led a full ife outside the ring and chose to end his life. He made a decision, not Panama.
If I murder your family, and you are driven into a deep depression that eventually leads to killing yourself. I'm responsible for your death as well. Welcome to the real world dude. Our actions have much much deeper consequences then are immediately apparant. He broke the rules, he broke the law and it ultimately led to the destruction of a family and the life of a promising young kid. :deal
Lewis is a total piece of crap, and I dont doubt he cheated in many other fights. Just the way he was talking behind Restos back in the bar, is proof he would never help him even if he won the lottery. Resto comes accross as just an ignorant blue collar type guy who was a fighter. Probably strong in the ring but very weak minded. I think he got some closure, but Im still not convinced he knew exactly the extent of what was going on that night.
I saw this documentary yesterday and what I find strange is that Resto didn't felt a difference in his gloves. I can't believe that. It was not his first fight so he must've felt SOME difference. Still I felt major sorry for him.
Are you sure you watched it from start to finish. The biggest outcome of the documentary is that Resto finally admitted that he knew something had been done to his gloves. It ended up being a confession, essentially. I feel for Luis Resto and I hope he can go on with his life. He had a responsibility to tell the referee if he knew something had been tampered with, but he was clearly depicted as a weak minded individual throughout. All he knows is fighting, and he doesn't deal with confrontation well outside of the ring. He wasn't about to ask questions. Young kid, blue collar guy, he knows he should have said something now and he has asked for forgiveness. Goodluck to him.
Resto knew what was going on. I remember when the whole thing happened in real time. I remember his reaction when Collins Sr grabbed his arm, and his first reaction was to pull away then he looked over at Lewis to come save him. The first thing out of Lewis' mouth was "Those are the glove you gave us" Not what the issue or whats going on....They both got what the deserved. With that being said Collins death wasnt I dont think thier fault. What wasnt told was that Colllins Jr was a drunk before that, and all we have is the words of a guy that was his friend that claimed he said he was going to kill them both..My Question is if a guy caused you life long health problems wouldnt you be pissed at him??? the guy wasnt pissed. I think it was a case of a drunk driver....I havent watched the docu yet but I planned out getting to it sometime this weekend.
If you kill my family and later on I go and kill someone else or myself, it is not your fault I did those actions, it is my actions and my actions alone. I hate to say this but Collins and Resto were both victims after the fight, Resto lost his livlihood and family, Collins lost the fight and damaged his retina. The only difference between the two is that Collins started drinking, turned down fights, and got into a wreck endangering himself and his friend and sadly he died. Resto kept on pushing and he is still here today.
I loved it...I thought it was great! However, I find it LAUGHABLE when I hear people say that Billy Collins was robbed from an "GREAT CAREER"!!! If a regional "CLUB FIGHTER" like Resto could continue to land punches over & over again...Trust me Resto did him a favor because during that era from 83-90 (Remember Collins was 22) there was so many talented and HARD-HITTING welters that would have LITERALLY KILLED him "IN THE RING"...Duran, Whitaker, Leonard, Julian Jackson, Terry Norris, Chavez Sr., Camacho, Hearns...etc. RIP Collins...Although I must admit...I felt kinda' bad for Resto.
Than I must've missed that for one or another reason (probably because it was very late at night, and there weren't any subtitles). Thanks. I will watch it again when I have time Goodluck and all the best to him indeed.
I walked away from the documentary with a mixed bag of emotions. 1. Resto looked like a man who does not handle verbal confrontations well, he looked like a completely mentally broken man. The question is how much of that was before the fight and how much of that is a result of his years in prison, the years spent essentially homeless and all the years living with the guilt? 2. Resto's confrontations with Lewis, they showed how reluctant Resto was to really get down to the bottom of things. A beaten man, maybe. Lewis and his silver tongue, definitely. But, again, how much of that was Resto's own guilt? How much of Resto's meekness was a result of him not wanting to admit how big a part he really was in all this? Maybe he was only letting out most of the truth? At this point it's hard to tell. 3. Collins' dad was/is an ass and probably still feels guilty about what he did. He didn't allow his son to fight anymore because of the lawsuit, he probably was partially the reason Collins jr. was an alcoholic and he rode his son like a meal ticket. 4. Panama Lewis is a piece of excrement. period. Somebody shot-gun him to the back of the head.
i liked the documentary... saw it last night on demand i wasnt too familiar with the story until i read this thread and decided to watch the documentary... i did find it interesting the "power" that lewis had over resto... every time lewis spoke to him, resto just looked down as if he was "trained" to be that way because of being a fighter and taking commands from your trainer... i could see the lies in lewis' eyes when he spoke... even when he took off his sunglasses to look resto in the eyes.... theres that guilty "but i will act hard til the end and deny it" look that he had in his eyes and in the tone in which he spoke... it annoyed me that lewis kept saying "you understand?" after every sentence as if he was trying to convince the interviewer and whoever will be watching that he knew what he was talking about.... in a way.. i do feel bad for resto... granted, he finally admitted that he did know what was going on....it took alot of courage... i think he just wanted panama to ALSO admit that he knew what was going on... lewis should be banned from ANYTHING boxing related...
