    Hi Buddy.
You can catch the Downes v Giardello fight on You Tube, you get about 10 minutes.
FYI- lots of obscure fights on YT, check it out.
    stay safe buddy.

I actually wrote it without intending the double entendre, but realised before posting & decided to keep it in (that one was intentional)

Supposedly. I watched the fight on the BBC I think but can neither confirm nor deny he said that. Never heard it.

But as you say if he did it backfired. If I remember rightly he spun Hagler half way round with a punch but straight away Hagler put it back on him.
    Bit of a bloodbath.

It was a pretty one-sided fight

Marvin carved him up like a Thanksgiving turkey.

Hagler destroyed him. This was definitely not a fight between two guys rated in the all-time Top 15 middleweights.

    Hi Buddy.
Good glad to be of service, have spoken to Downes on many occasions at various boxing functions up until his demise, and found him very concise, adroit, and above all charming, which would seem at odds with the persona he liked to portray to the media and public, like a lot of boxers, the fighter in the ring was not the fighter in civvies having a cup of coffee or a pint, regards his career, he maintained the worst beating he took, was not the one admonished by Tiger, which is generally perceived to be, but the defeat he suffered at the hands of Spider Webb, he was also of the opinion that Webb was a technically more gifted fighter than Tiger ! also would not continence any credit for outpointing Robinson, which underlined his humility, anomaly : he had the smallest, thinnest hands on a boxer I have seen.
    stay safe Ted.

Who was left out so Minter could move up a place, Mark Kaylor?

I wasn't being serious. I can't for the life of me think why anyone could think Minter is an all-time great, never mind top 15. Even the likes of Michael Nunn achieved more than him at 160 and would comfortably outpoint him.
