Who is fighter of the year in 2008? JMM after a close loss to Pac and a victrory over dangerous veteran Joel Casamayor? Paul Williams, if he beats Phillips, would have lost a fight during the year but came back with two first round knockouts in a row, one being at middleweight and if he beats Phillips in dominant fashion like many expect him to do that would make three dominant performance in a row and a title in a second weight class. Margarito? With his destruction of Kermit Cintron for the second time and his victory over welterweight king Miguel Cotto in a fight of the year Candidate. He won the welterwieght championship and two alphabets this year. Pac? Won the superfeatherweight championship against top 3 p4per Marquez, won the WBC belt at lightweight by beating David Diaz becoming the first Asian to win a world title in 4 different weight classes and getting up to Welterweight to challenge Oscar De La Hoya. If he beats DLH he is fighter of the year no contest but if he loses a competitive fight would you still consider him for that award? Calzaghe? Close decision win over legend and HOFer B-Hop and a dominant performance over (a shot) RJJ. Is Hopkin's performance against Pavlik enough to make Calzaghe fighter of the year? Hopkins? Close decision loss to top 3 P4Per Joe Calzaghe and domination of Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik in a fight at 170 (where Pavlik never fought before thought). Can Darchynian be considered after the draw (robbery) he suffered in the Philippines angainst Z Gorres (where he sent Gorres down half a dozen time and those knockdowns were ruled as slips), his comeback against a solid fighter in Kirilov and his domination of P4Per and very highly regarded Christian Mijares (even thought he won't be awarded that since nobody knows him except junkies like us and that would'nt make boxing appealing to the general public.) Chad Dawson? Close (but questionnable)win over a very good and experienced fighter in Glen Johnsson and domination of former light heavyweight king Antonio Tarver. Other. Specify in thread.
Im going with Darchynian on this one. He will probably get comeback of the year thought (him or Vitaly).
it was a tossup between Vic, Margo, and JC... as much as i dislike JC, he had a pretty eventful year Vic had an amazing comeback, but had that robbery... and Margo...well...i voted for Margo...because anyman who can brutalize a KO artist like Cotto...well ****...i think it should go to him...two of em actually...Cintron's KO rate is high as ****...and if Cintron KO's N'dou then itll look THAT much better
Very good thread and tough choices up there... :think I am between Darchinyan, Margarito and Dawson, but I will give it to Vic, just because many people (me included) didn't give him much of a chance in the Mijares fight, but not only did he win, he did it in dominating fashion, proving many fans and most writers wrong. Vic Darchinyan it is. :bbb PS: Of course, if Pacquiao beats De La Hoya, then it's a no contest as to who the FOTY should be.
That was a dominating win..but one win does not a good year make. If one dominating win is all it took then Margo REALLY is the FOTY.
Vic D. Calzag had as good a year as Hopkins/Margarito Calzag just doesn't have enough substance behind the two names he picked up in 2008.
Either Darchiyan or Margarito. I don't see why Calzaghe is getting serious consideration. Sure he has the name value, but beating a 2008 version of Jones is nothing special. Jones has done nothing impressive since 2003. Hopkins is still a top fighter, but his performance was rather underwhelming (the same for B-Hop as well). Margarito beat two world titlists in the best division in the sport, both in impressive fashion, and one of them was an undefeated top 10 ranked p4p fighter. Darchinyan had that draw to Gorres, but after that, he dominated two title-holders, including a top 10 p4p ranked champ in Mijares.
Don't you think Darchinyan's win was more dominating than Margo's? I mean yes, Margo did make Cotto's face a bloody mess in the 11th, but those two basically split the rounds up to that point and in the first half of the fight Cotto was schooling Margo at times. Vic, on the other hand, completely dominated Mijares from the opening bell and he KO'd him earlier.
Went for Calzaghe, came over to America to beat 2 legends in Las Vegas and new york, past their best I know, well shot in Jones' case but still. Tempted to go for Hopkins with how well he did against Joe and the masterpiece against Pavlik but he wont get it. I've not watched Darchynian or even know who he's fought before Mijares so i'll look into him.
Mijares was a bottom rung P4Per Cotto was a top 5 P4Per. KOing a top 5 P4P guy in the fashion Margo did is much more impressive than Darchinyan beating Mijares. Not to slight Vic..but Margarito's performance holds more credence IMO.
Hmmm, I see your point. Still, if we're talking about "performance", Darchinyan's was better overall than Margo's. Don't forget that most people had (and still have) Mijares very highly rated, plus very few gave Vic much of a chance to beat him. I honestly believed Mijares would school Darchinyan before the fight.
I certainly thought Mijares would own Darchinyan so his performance was THAT much better IMO. Still it's not as good as Margarito dethroning the WW king and residential top 5 P4P fighter in such an epic fashion.
I don't think we really disagree on this one. I believe it's fair to say that Vic's win was more dominating, when Margo's win holds more credence, as you said. The reason I go for Vic on this thread, is because he actually has 3 wins (the Z Gorres draw was pretty much a travesty) this year. And he managed to perform like this, when 4 fights ago he was brutally KO'd by Donaire. It's the way he has recovered that impresses me the most.
I havent seen the Gorres fight so I can't comment...all I know is Gorres had him hurt twice with one KD and Vic apparently swept the 2nd half. Let's not put Gorres on the same level as Kermit "Meathead" Cintron. Cintron had an ABC title was coming off a pretty hot win streak and pretended like he was going places at WW. Margarito dispatched of him pretty easily. Whether this is AS impressive as Vic's 3rd round TKO win PRE-Mijares is up to your interpretation really.
