Assuming Pavlik did finally agree to face Abraham and got beaten, what then?

How would his fans see the future for Pavlik, then?

If it's a close fight, you rematch him. Simple.

If it's a blow out or a massive KO loss, 160 is so weak that Pavlik easily can take a few rebound fights and then take out one of the weaker guys at 160 for a title belt. He could also flirt with a move up to 168 where more talent and big money lies.

My question is: would his fans stop supporting him as avidly, if Pavlik lost clearly to Abraham? Would Pavlik stop attracting big crowds if he campaigned at 160 lbs against lesser fighters like Sturm and Mundine, say?

I have a hard time believing his fans would stop following him if he lost a close fight.

His fans are passionate and love their fighter (which is a very admirable quality) so unless Pavlik starts losing to the Alfonso Gomez' of the world, He'll always have a large following audience.

You want my honest opinion. You got it. If Pavlik lost to a guy like Abraham, he should retire. Guys who lose to C+ fighters aren't going anywhere.

In that case, Pavlik will continue to make a lot of money and sell out halls and be a big draw and fan favourite even if he gets beaten convincingly by Abraham. The question then is, why does Pavlik not fight him? The risk/reward is not bad for him in this case. Hopkins has already exposed his limitations very clearly. Is Pavlik so afraid of losing the middleweight championship that he won't risk proving himself against the best of the rest? In that case, how can he convince himself that he is indeed "the man" at 160 lbs?

Because Bob Arum knows a gold mine when he stumbles into one and he kind of stumbled into one with Pavlik.

Like I said, John Duddy types are pretty much what you'll see with Kelly...and occasionally he WILL leave 160 for big money fights at higher weight classes.

Guys who lose to C+ fighters wouldn't have beaten fighters like Taylor. Fighters who could beat Taylor at 160 lbs could very well lose to Abraham at 160 lbs though.

Pavlik will be able to make a lot of money fighting the Duddys of this world even if he lost to Abraham; have we not already established that? So why doesn't Arum agree to this fight? Pavlik's already lost the aura of invincibility and what is more, he's had his limitations badly exposed, so, in my eyes, he has more to win than he has to lose by facing Abraham.

Because it's easier to pretend Abraham doesn't exist and tout yourself as the #1 MW in the world than to go out there and fight someone who may be as good as your guy. It's called the invisibility complex.

But in boxing fans' eyes, Pavlik is suffering from a significant credibility deficit. The longer he'll pretend Abraham is not the big white elephant in the room, the greater will this credibility deficit become. Surely Arum might see that.
