Marco Antonio Barrera Erik Morales Juan Manuel Marquez Naseem Hamed Manny Pacquaio ????? At 122 Gomez pretty much beats them all, but how about at 126??
At 126 they all beat him except for probably Naz. But id say the others are only slightly above him at 126.
Wilfredo Gomez became normal at weights of 126 to 130 pounds............. He was nothing special up there...... His best show was his 1984 schooling of the clueless Juanito LaPorte for the WBC title...... But Gomez' reign was short once he ran into Azumah Nelson in Dec. of '84 and was brutally KO'd..... We all pretty much know that Gomez got a hometown decision over Rocky Lockridge in Puerto Rico in 1985 for the 130 pound crown..... I have the fight on tape..... I had Rocky winning by several points after 15 rds........ Come 1986, the late Alfredo Layne knocked the **** outta Gomez to take that title back to Africa...... Gomez retired after that beating........ Later on Layne was shot and killed in a squabble........ MR.BILL
I tend to agree with this. There was a world of difference between a prime 122 Gomez and a past it 126 Gomez. I don't pick anybody over prime Gomez at 122. I'd favor all these guys except Naz. Gomez could squeak one out maybe.
Gomez looked shaky and unconvincing against laporte as well imo.Laporte could well have won that fight had he thrown more than 5 punches a round.even then he had Gomez unsteady at times.
Like Gil Clancy stated years ago about LaPorte...... "LaPorte can punch, but when pitted against a better fighter, LaPorte goes to the ropes and makes ear muffs with his gloves." I too noticed that LaPorte.... He often failed to let his hands go..... Or he'd come off the ropes to wing one or two hard shots hoping to land the bomb.... If that failed, he'd go back to the ropes and make more ear muffs....... I hated that..... I always thought Juan LaPorte was a "B" fighter at 126 to 130 pounds...... His power and chin were intact, but his boxing skills were average......... MR.BILL:deal
:good I agree my pops always said the same thing about this fight that Laporte could have won this one but was too passive, showed to much respect for Gomez. although when i met Laporte I brought it up in a respectful kind of way if he could have beat Gomez with more experiencem he didnt make any excuses and just raved that Gomez was still a great fighter.
Some fighters never were any good above their best weight. Bob Foster was one of them, Wilfredo Gomez another.
J.C. Chavez, too............ Chavez was drained down at 130....... Chavez was strong as a bull at 135 but, he was still growing and maturing into a great fighter..... Chavez hit his peak and found his real home at 140 pounds....... At 147, Chavez never accomplished anything really big or notable....... MR.BILL
I think all of them beat him, some fighters just don't translate well at other weights...Gomez was on of those guys. It's not like we're saying he was completely incompetent at 126lbs either, but guys like Barrera, Marquez, and Pacquiao were killers.
he a no shot at a prime stylish morales but may have a shot at a warrior morales. no shot at all against pacquiao and barrera hamed-gomez would be great. 50-50 fight but i cling on gomez If pac-jmm 1 is the prime JMM, then gomez would beat him
