At 147, how would Mayweather match-up with Robinson?

`Sugar Ray Robinson - Pound For Pound` is a great highlight vid of his career... as for individual full fights, Robinson v Lamotta 6 (the only one of the 6 fights ever caught on film) was a complete masterclass, its a must see.

Don't get me wrong Floyd can frustrate the hell out of anyone with his defence and counterpunching ability but the most simple way I can put it is that I can see Robinson landing a similar good shot against Floyd that Mosely did and if Ray lands that he will have the tools to end it. I see it as bit of a chess match early as Robinson is figuring Floyd out while Floyd is trying to counter Rays aggression but as it goes on I see SRR slowly taking over for a stoppage around the 8th or 9th.

I don't favour many WWs to KO Floyd because of his defensive abilities but I would pick SRR to do it. As many have said on this thread already, Robinson has dynamite in both fists especially at 147 and he has both the hand speed and skill to land those shots. Robinson has too many advantages here for me, he has comparble speed, far better power, great toughness and probably most importantly he has the mental coolness to just stick with the plan as Floyd tries to frustrate and counter.

Firstly, pbf wouldnt face srr, too risky.

If they did fight, any decent boxing afficianado would have to go with srr. Look at his resume. Pbf cant rely on his zero for boxing greatness and we as fans have to hold him accountable for the fighters he ducked.

Pbf only has an advantage in defense. Srr would not be kept honest by pbf's pitter patter and would walk him down and finish him once he was hurt.

    What a fight.

I think under Robinsons rules ie smaller gloves and 15 rounds, SRR wins a decision. SRR was excellent at putting on pressure while taking minimal punishment, he could also get in and out of range very quickly (not unlike Pac is many ways) and matches Floyd for speed. The most we have seen Floyd tested in when Castillo and DLH put on pressure and that was pretty blind pressure with not a lot landing, Robinson would be more clinical in that situation.

Over 12 rounds I give Mayweather the edge, I do think Mayweather has the better defence and he will be able to get off with better combinations with modern gloves.

One thing is for sure, no way is Money Mayweather staying undefeated in the 50s, how those fragile hands hold up to going the distance with 6oz gloves is also intersting.

I have Robinson vs Basilio on dvd. Gona watch it later. Basilio seems relentless.

To the OP I think Mayweather is competitive against most. However, I think Robinson (Leonard too) are MUCH too big for him. Iron chinned and with insane power in both hands I think he'd stop any 147 Mayweather I have seen.

Not many do I pick over Mayweather.

SRR by late KO or points. Floyd has never seen a fighter of that caliber, as good as he is.

Here's mine, Kid Gavilan is a defensive whiz himself, since the main argument for Floyd is his defensive acumen.

Ray stopped Gavilan both times they met.

Gavilan vs Robinson ended in UDs for Sugar Ray both times, no stoppages. Nobody stopped Gavilan in his whole career.

These are unfair match-ups for Mayweather. SRR, SRL and Tommy Hearns are all far too big for Floyd. fairer match ups would be Aaron Pryor, Roberto Duran, JCC sr, Arguello, Whitaker and I think Floyd on his night has the tools to beat any of those 5.

Well whaddaya know, I was thinking of another guy.

    Yeah, it was decision wins.

Anyway, my argument still sticks, SRR on points.

Floyd beats SRR via twitter and Facebook. Even in a hypothetical match-up, Floyd ducks him.
