At 147, how would Mayweather match-up with Robinson?

I see the sothpaw stance and speed giving Sugar a little problem early but would adapt by mid fight and would have a lot of success with the left hook counter. Robinson's foot work would keep him in position to off set Pac straight left and ultimately would land a flush left counter. Power favors Ray and both hands were equally as effective. KO round 7 or 8 for The great one.

I agree with some posters here and might even push it further i think Mayweather style wise matchesup the poorest with Hearns.
Fairly convinced that outside of some fluke Hearns wins that 99 out of 100 times.

Noone has ever outboxed Hearns and Mayweather has no chance of a stoppage, he also does not have the physical attributes or style to make it interesting.

 

Now it's Floyd and Hearns.

Nice highlight. I haven't seen much footage of Robinson...from what I have seen, my general impression is that he seems very raw and destructive in a way that I rarely see in the sport. Aggressive, powerful, fast, and throws good combinations. I wish more highlights would focus on his movement around the ring, as I've always heard that his style influenced Ali's, so it would be interesting to see if that's where the famous 'dancing' type footwork came from. He also looks quite tall and rangy, which is something Floyd would definitely dislike.

On the other hand, I don't like how low he carries those hands...I'm sure it worked for him, just like it worked for Ali, but low hands against someone as accurate and quick as Mayweather would be problematic. He'd probably have to eat quite a few straight right counters or left hooks, but judging by what you guys are saying, he had a great chin, so it shouldn't hurt him.

He doesn't look invulnerable (when you're that aggressive you leave yourself open more than usual) but he does look like someone Floyd wouldn't be able to tame. By 'tame', I mean the usual thing Floyd does to opponents -- intimidates them with his skills and makes them gunshy, until he just picks them to pieces. I can't see Robinson backing down or just trying to survive until the end...if anything, I think someone with these type of offensive abilities would force Floyd into a fast paced fight rather than a boxing match. Floyd's low workrate and patient, cerebral style won't do him many favours here, because he'll have fast, hard combinations coming his way, and seeing as Robinson could fight for 15 rounds, he won't tire down the stretch either.

I'd have to watch more of Robinson to make any real evaluation, though.

 

No he doesn't. He's not beating Duran, Chavez, or Whitaker at their best.

Robinson. He beat welterwieghts that were better than Maywether. With boxing being one of two biggest sports in America, along with baseball, the base of young men going into the sport was off the charts compared to today. There were 30 or 40 welters vying for top ten, since 1980's it's an effort to find a top 10.
I'd rate Tommy Bell and Kid Gavillan over floyd. Robinson beat both. If Gavilan did not have Robinson as competition, this thread might well be about him vs. Floyd. He would have held title long time, been listed as one of greatest welters--which he is anyway, but not to degree he should be in my opinion.

Basilio as welter--anyone pick him over Floyd? I do. Floyd is clearly great now, but boxing has long history that people should not ignore.

 

He schools Chavez and especially Duran. His ring IQ would frustrate the quitter.
