David Tua is still only 36 years old. We forget this, because he exploded onto the world stage when still in his young 20's. He has been rather inactive in recent years, so is not too beat up. -Inactivity has been the problem. He was due to fight Arreola last year, but it did not happen. Now suddenly he is in roaring form getting ready for Top-15 ranked fighter Shane Cameron on Oct 3rd. He is fit, trimmed down, and raring to go. At 36, is David Tua still a threat to the division?
That is the strange thing, Doby. He suddenly seems "hungry" again. It is like this fight with Cameron has suddenly brought back the ferocious intent that he used to have. That is why a lot of Tua fans are sitting up. Could be an interesting final run on the cards.
Sometimes breaks in your career is good to have. He's got to have that hunger. Man, if Lewis didn't ruin him...he would have just been unstoppable IMO. I hope he still has it. The HW is just not fun to watch these days. I watch that Ruiz KO once in awhile on youtube. I'll have my pointer at that certain point and just click, watch and click again...fun in a sick way. If Foreman can do it, so can the Tuaman.
Nah he wasnt really ever that good. Against Lewis who admittedly was a great champion it was a total shutout. He never won a round...he has a left hook and thats it. Lewis said all he had to do was be careful and keep his right hand up and he was safe...of course he was cautious all the way through the fight and didnt wanna take chances but Tua looked incredibly limited in there. Good fighter but never quite good enough back then...maybe now he's older he can do it in the weak division? Possible but i doubt it. Fighers dont get better after long lay offs and age creeping up. They get worse.
Yeah Axeman - but he beat 4 champions - Rachman, Ruiz, Moorer and Maskaev - knocking all of them out. So how can you say that?
Great power and a great chin can even get someone with very limited abilities to the top at any given time. That's boxing. Tua has as hard a punch as you can have and as good a chin. You never know. I would have loved to see Tua/Arreola. That would have been like firing two cannon balls into each other.
If he has the drive I think he can get towards the top end of the division: I highly doubt he'll be champ, or even a titlist, but you never know. He has a granite chin and a left hook that spells disaster for anyone that it lands on. He'll never beat a Klit; he could maybe get his hands on the WBA title, should/when Valuev loses it (Tua's left hook + David Haye ....). Or maybe he'll end up getting the WBC somehow when Vitali leaves the sport (I imagine next year after 2 or 3 more fights).
Yep - Tua v Ruiz was a classic knockout inside 30 secs. And the Moorer one too. And yes - Tua vs Arreola would have been a bombfest. I think Cameron might be too - while it lasts.
Tua is still a great puncher, with one of the best chins in the business. His lack of interest to fight these days, makes him another wasted talent IMO.
His inactivity may or may not have hurt him. As others have said, I question how good he ever was. With the division the way it is, I think he could, if he applies himself, at least earn a title shot.
