Not sure what Tyson’s record was when he beat Bruno, but I felt Tyson was exposed a bit in that fight. Bruno, who lacked confidence visibly, wobbled Tyson a round or so before Tyson finished him. You could say Bruno stunned Tyson for a moment, and if Bruno followed dup quickly and landed something serious, Tyson could have gone down.

It was that moment when I thought, whoever can 1 ) Last a few rounds with Tyson, and 2 ) Hurt him from the outside has a shot to beat him. I did not see Douglas as that guy, mostly because he could be a lethargic type of performer, but he had the tools.

Tyson was a dynamic performer. He was perhaps the best of all time vs. mediocre opposition, but I never viewed him as an unbeatable force in the ring. Many of his opponents were scared rabbits and beaten before they entered the ring. In boxing something happens when a guy loses his aura of invincibility. Once Tyson lost his, he was never the same.

After the Spinks destruction Tyson got rid of Rooney. He was sloppy and somewhat wild against Bruno, more hittable, but still one hell of a fighter. Then he looked really sharp against Williams. So at that point, Tyson was still great, and perceived as nearly invincible.

However, he was given what I think he perceived as an easy foe in Douglas, so he was probably less than motivated. Everyone was looking past that fight to the potential mega-fight with Holyfield.

The one hint that Tyson was not at his best was when footage and photos got released of him getting decked in sparring by Greg Page, a guy who was a somewhat past-it fighter at that point. So some eyebrows were being raised. However, Tyson was Tyson, and Douglas was a B fighter. So truthfully, the one guy who anyone thought had a legit chance to beat Tyson was Holyfield. Douglas was supposed to be another relatively quick KO, and the 40-something to 1 odds reflected that. I think Angelo Dundee might have picked Douglas or said he had a real chance, but he was one of very very few.

One thing you can say for Dougals is he was a big man, tall, with plenty of handspeed and skill, and decent enough snap on his blows, when he was at his best. He looked pretty solid against Mike Williams, Tony Tucker, Trevor Berbick, and Oliver McCall. So you can't say he was a total bum. But he was fighting a guy on a totally different level, and Douglas was a guy who had mentally folded on occasion, and had losses and suspect performances to fighters who were not exactly world beaters. So you figure he's going to get hit harder and faster than he's ever been hit before and go out. Trouble was, that happened one fight too late, for Tyson.

I know this isn't a Douglas-Tyson discussion, but I remember it so well -- and I didn't see it live. I think I was in middle school, and there was some function that we had that evening. My friends knew I was a bit of a boxing buff, so they'd ask me about it -- I assured them I was taping it, but I expected it to be long since finished by the time we got home.

I think we got in at the tail end of the 7th (big surprise)...and it looked like Tyson had gotten a little missed up (was that swelling...huh?)...then Tyson knocked him down in the 8th (oh great, upset in the making and I jinx it by coming home)....then I saw Douglas take him out. WOW!

At that time the question marks where still out on Holy, ****, even after he won the title the question marks were still out.

There was nobody on the horizon as far as i, and many many others, could see and he coulda held the title for as long as he wanted

In looking back, I know I didn't think Holyfield stood a chance against any Tyson...yet he went 2-0....shows what I know. Obviously I was enamored by the Tyson mythos.

Holyfield was such a strange fighter to me. It seemed like he made far to many wars than necessary (made for great viewing though), and how does he end up trading with Tyson, but is a rope and 8 count away from possibly losing to Bert Cooper. Gotta love boxing.

Evander Holyfield, who at the time was the undefeated/undisputed #1 heavyweight contender at the time that Mike Tyson was 37-0 and the baddest man on the planet!

no. anyone on here that says otherwise is full of it. i was a casual boxing fan at this time but tyson was not only heavyweight champ but also the #1 lb for lb fighter in the world. the douglas fight was a shocker and i'll never forget watching it. what gets lost imo becuase the upset was so big is that this was an incredible fight.

I figured that if Tyson was stupid enough to get in the ring with George Foreman, his reign and mythological reputation would go out the window. He wasn't.

Berbick cracked him? Are you serious? Quick Tillis took him the distance but didn't win. Tyson's reflexes and speed was too much for him.
