    ^^ this

Pac ran away from home at the age of 15. he fought as a professional at the age of 16 at the 106lbs division but he was malnourished and weighed only 95 pounds so he has to carry metal weights in his pockets to make the 106lbs limit. He started with no promoter, he wasn't grown to become an elite fighter, no one refined his skills, he was fighting out there against older men on pure guts and brawling skills. Not to mention that he was at the time working as a full-time construction worker with meager food and budget, sleeps in cardboard boxes and sells cigarretes and candies in the streets to augment his income which he sends home to his province to help his mother. He fights and trains only when he has time. its just that he has natural fighting talent which carried him to the top of the sport and made people notice.

what is amazing is his longevity. professional fighting is undoubtedly more brutal than amateur fighting. for a little kid to fight grown men and succeed and climb weights and at his adulthood is still fighting at the top is what makes it amazing. most brawlers do not have long careers but pac who was a brawler in his days was able to last and evolve into something better as a fighter

The entire idea of this thread was to put into focus why Pacquiao's advance from 106 to 147 alone doesn't make him an ATG fighter as many would choose to argue. What puts him into that discussion are dominating victories like the one we saw 2 weeks back....

    He was 200lbs.

Both Ruiz and Jones were weighed on a scale that never balanced and was acknowledge that the scale never balanced.

    They were rushed.

Mackie weighed Jones before and after the weigh in. he was 199/200

    :good

At age 16, Roy Jones Jr. fought with other teenagers, in 3 round amateur bouts. Pac at 16, lied about being 18, and fought against grown men and seasoned pro boxers in 10-12 round fights.

    Once again:

    At age 16:

Roy Jones Jr. was beating up kids. Manny Pacquiao was beating up men.

Roy Jones Jr. - headgear. Manny Pacquiao - no headgear.

Roy Jones Jr. - 3 rounders. Manny Pacquiao - 10-12 rounders.

Roy Jones Jr. - amateur experience before pros. Manny Pacquiao - no experience, straight to pros.

I believe Clarence "Bones" Adams, started also at 16. What is the age limit? I mean, Benetez won the title at 17 and the PR rules should be the same as the US rules.

Yey and Pipino Cuevas was 14 when he turned pro! Thats why he had so many losses early in his career, but he was matured by 18 when he won the title agains Angel Espada. Also Hearns fought Mike Ayala as A bantamweight in the National championships When he was a Teen. Can you imagine Tommy as a Bantam? Mike Ayala won that fight.

Who gives a ****, he was fighting other amateurs. You might aswell say Valuev is the greatest weight jumper as he was a 10 pound baby and 35 years later was two-time heavyweight champion weighing more than 320 pounds.

well fighters skip over divisions. Jones probably would have done so too. For Pac you've got 105, 108, 112, 115, 118, 122, 126, 130, 135, 140, 147 which is pretty much the same amount of divisions. Maybe RJJ could have been the greatest weight jumper of all time, but in the end he isn't. When he won those Junior fights, he was fighting other juniors. Maybe turning pro at such a young age would have ruined his whole career. We don't know.

Pacquiao fought other adults as a pro, even when he was just a kid.

This is just funny. Yes, he fought people older than him, but maybe 2, 3 years. Also, he wasn't fighting grizzled vets and champions in 12 round wars like people are trying to claim. He was fighting other green fighters with little to no xp, or some with a few fights and losing records.

It was a hard life, no doubt, and good for him to have done what he has done, but the original post is just showing that his weight progression isn't singular, and that other boxers have done it too. It should also put to rest the crazy steroids talks, showing that his weight gain is not amazing.
