I heard that having a strong neck lessens brain damage when taking a hit to the head. The weaker somebodys neck is the more likely the brain is to get the whiplash effect where the brain will have rapid acceleration and decceleration. I don't a think that having a strong neck prevents brain damage completely but it seems like it would definitely help. I make sure to do about 100 reps,3 sets front and back of neck pushups once or twice every week.

I guess i dont even see how this is comparable. A life as a boxer will take waaaaaay more out of someone then mma, and I dont see how anyone can really say otherwise. Obviously its going to depend on a case by case basis, but on average I dont think theres much comparison. Theres a reason boxers wind up with brain damage, and dying after fights on an almost annual basis.

How are they not too different?

An MMA guys week could involve only spending maybe 60% of his time kickboxing sparring, while the rest is live grappling sparring, and working on all the other aspects of their game.

A boxers sparring consists entirely of punching eachother, every sparring match, all throughout.

When i used to train in MMA i would RARELY leave practise with a headache (other then from exhaustion) and having a headache after sparring in boxing was an almost daily occurance.

Even in training, Boxers take way more out of themselves.

And thats nothing to brag about. Its actually a big reason I'd actually rather my brother do mma then boxing, and if i have a son id rather him do mma then boxing. Boxing takes way too much out of an individual IMO. I love it to death and to me there will never be another sport like it, but its the cold reality.

I agree to a point...a boxer will do more sparring..will take more head trama..but some gyms do more striking..and honestly..if you don't ever go live in sparring...then you aren't really getting ready to fight...and if you go live, you will get a headache. So I would say a mma guy takes more joint damage...a boxer more brain trama...but a mma guy if he is really training to fight will take some brain trama as well.

is there any long term damage from being choked out frequently? say, 2-4 times a year depending on how often you fight, possibly counting training sessions?

Definitely, between the time that you're unconscious and the time that you're revived your brain is lacking oxygen. During this time you're losing brain cells and causing brain damage.
