Canelo not even fighting at 160 yet. Sure Sergio is fading and all but let's not go overboard shallwe.
I don't think the weight matters. Martinez is a blown up 154 pounder. I don't think he's ever gonna be a true 160 pounder. He's done well in the division because he's fought guys that can't handle his speed. But as we saw tonight that speed is starting to deteriorate and its only matter of time before one of the big middleweights take advantage. If I was him I would drop down to his more natural weight of 154. Where he can face guys his own size from now on. And doesn't have to rely on his speed all the time.
Straight right is probably the weapon of choice for all of his notable potential opponents. Also the punch he's eating the most. he's not going to retire so hopefully he cashes out and doesn't get leveled by an opponent that doesn't put asses in the seats.
HBO doesn't make that decision. Lou Dibella is Martinez's promoter. He makes the call what network Martinez fights on. And if he wants Martinez to fight Canelo for a gigantic payday on Showtime. There is not a damn thing HBO can do about it. Except maybe force Jim Lampley to whine about it on "The Fight Game".
He won't kill him, but in a year when Alvarez is more developed and Sergio's back from another injury he could be ready for the taking.
