Just curious on everyones opinion. Do people still view him as a light weight / light welter mowing welters.... or is he really just a welter weight that benefitted from good marketing?

I think he's just a 140-pounder who's strong enough to hang with the welterweights. He probably prefers it this way because fighting at 147 gives him the added bonus of not having to worry about a weight-limit he has to make. He can simply train for a fight and the weight will naturally fall below 147.

If he was anybody else he would be fighting at 135 or 140. He doesn't even have to boil down to welter, so clearly hes not a natural 147.

I would say yes. Apart from height...yes.

If you check the tale of the tape vs Cotto, he is almost identical. He has grown into the weight quickly...not sure he could make 140lbs as easily as some people say he could, at the minute.

He's clearly big enough to fight at 147 but he's not a full blown welter.

    Don't agree, man.

I certainly don't think he could make 135lbs at this point. He probably could make 140lbs at a push, but not stay there for more than 1 or 2 bouts.

Pac was what, upper 140s against Margarito? He can easily cut to 140

Well, if we still had same day weigh ins, he's a welterweight. He could make 140 easily if he has to eat more than 6,000 cals a day.

Most of these welterweights are really 160-170 pounds walking around and weighing at least 157 on fightnight, so no, pac is not that size at all.

Aaron Pryor comes to mind. 5'6'', fought his whole professional career at 140 until the end, when he got stopped at 148 or so in his only loss. I think he and Pac are legitimately about the same size, with a few more pounds of fluff on Pryor on fight night. 140.

    I think he's a small welter... like cotto & floyd & zab
shane mosley is a perfect welter
margarito clottey & paul williams are larger welters

    edit:

none the less though I don't view him as anything less than a welter....

Floyd and zab ARE small welters, but Cotto is a much thicker guy in skeletal structure. Zab and Floyd both almost look fragile and smallish in person - I remember looking Floyd in the eyes and thinking, we look the same size, and I was like 128 lbs then. Right before he fought Gatti. Not a big guy at all, in any way.
