Too early for me to rank Ward with either Calzaghe or RJJ. He might pass them both on resume, remains to be seen. If I judge them on skill alone it would be RJJ, Ward, Calzaghe.
Ward hasn't fought anyone close to the level of Toney or Eubank. I also feel Malinga, Thornton, Brewer and Mitchell were far stiffer than Miranda or Bika etc. Calzaghe fought Kessler at his best, and a countering Reid at his best was stiffer than the overblown Abraham. Woodhall would've outfoxed Froch.
:deal Its funny how many very good wins on Joe's record gets ignored or called "bums" by the ignorant masses when Ward gets credit for beating Allan Green
Calzaghe Jones Ward Calzaghe came the closest to unifying the division and held all the major belts and has a better resume. Jones while head to head may have been the best super middleweight ever, simply didn't do enough at 168lbs to be rated number 1. It's too early for Ward to be regarded as good as either Calzaghe or Jones. He's had fewer defences than either Jones or Calzaghe and his best win against Kessler can't compete to Calzaghe's wins over Eubank and Kessler or Jones win over Toney. Given time and a good title run including a win over Bute he may someday be mentioned alongside Jones and Calzaghe but it's simply too early on in his career at this point.
Jones Ward Calzaghe = Kessler, Bika, Eubank (old and weight drained) legacy wise: Calzaghe - Currently holding down the reigns of a young division that was formed for people too little for LHW and too big for MW and the best win on his record is a 43 year old MW who he barely beat and was too scared to give a rematch, just as he was against Reid. Will eventually and rightfully so fall into obscurity. Ward - fights people while they are still close to their prime, if he fights Bute and wins convincingly he surpasses Calzaghe Jones - Didn't stay there very long though he could've dominated easily
You have to look at the division and what they achieved. I dont think Froch would have made it as far a few years back. At SMW so far Calzaghe - clearly a long way ahead at 168 Ward - done more than Jones at 168, but still fighting in Calzaghes shadow Jones - other than beating overated terrible SMW resume Toney, didnt do loads at SMW
