A visibly steamed Chucho Castillo was pulled by his corner after thirteen allowing Carlos Zarate clear passage to the semi-final after sustaining serious facial injuries including a badly broken nose. Castillo, who was competitive through ten was repeatedly tagged by Zarate through the eleventh and twelfth, his already streaming nose a mess of gore, a cut over his right eye which appeared to be caused by an accidental clash of heads in the third almost untenable.

With Castillo in need of a knockout and Zarate doing all of the heavy hitting ten eleven through thirteen, it was responsible corner-work though the fighter himself clearly disagreed.
