Ruben Olivares became the first man to qualify for the last eight with a late knockout victory over Lou Salica. Salica kept the fight close, moving to his left and carefully parrying the Olivares right while getting off some good punches of his own, but he was consistently nailed by a stinging jab for which he could not find a solution for until he began to consistently deploy his own jab in the middle rounds. Unfortunately for Salica, this meant Olivares was able to finally find a home for a pair of booming right hands in the tenth and Salica sank to his knees as though in prayer. Holding and stalling his way through the tenth, he actually rallied well in the eleventh but his organisation had left him and Olivares stiffened him for a ten count in the twelfth.
