    Brilliant video @haNZAgod

Very interesting how his system of boxing was similar to Ambrose Palmer's (a real old school boxer who taught Johnny Famechon his tricks).

Thanks for loading a great video Elite M.
Peak Lionel is my pick for our best ever Aussie fighter.

This is the guy you are thinking of @roughdiamond.
My old man knew Ambrose well n always reckoned he was the best Aussie boxing trainer in history. Ambrose was all about the left jab, educated footwork, defense and fitness.

    Cheers Guys.

Damn, the Palmer lineage is extremely deep. 'Father was a Victorian champion', 67 pro bouts, became a 3 weight national champion himself, trained Famechon and many others.

His system was extremely proven, obviously worked for anyone who implemented its concepts correctly, and looks great on film too.

Time to study this in depth.

One of the best fighters Australia has produced, and definitely the greatest Aboriginal boxer ever.

Very common, a lot of us have English or Irish surnames due to our elders being moved to missionary set ups during colonization and having our original names stripped and banned. But we have put a whole different Identity on the last name.

Aside from Famechon, Paul Ferrari and Rocky Mattioli also trained under Ambrose for a time amongst many others but Fammo was his masterpiece who best embodied Ambrose's boxing philosophies or what was termed "The method".

This article gives a brief outline of what Palmer's "method" entailed. It has a few inaccuracies but gives you a general idea.

Hi mate Lionel was trained by Jack Rennie as a pro but his old man Roy Rose was an amateur fighter and taught Lionel how to fight as a little kid. Lionel’s first official trainer as an amateur was Frank Oakes from Sale, a town in East Gippsland, Victoria. Lionel grew up in Jackson’s track, East Gippsland.

Lionel was a prodigy and won the Australian amateur flyweight title as a fifteen year old kid.

I know Lionel and Johnny Famechon had an easy spar on tv ringside in the late sixties but no film of it exists unfortunately.

Lionel’s first cousin Graeme “ Porky “ Brooke was a successful fighter who defeated Claude Noel to become Commonwealth lightweight champion.

    Cheers Mate.

How do you think a bout between Lionel and Fammo would have played out JC40?

Apparently it was touted but wiser heads thought better of putting our Bantamweight and Featherweight world champs against each other and potentially ruining the box office of one of them for local bragging rights. They were also friends and fans of each other too. I’m glad they never fought but it’s a fascinating match up.

Brooke was a very talented boxer himself. Barry Michael did a bit of a psychological number on him and his career didn’t really kick on but he was a talent no doubt.
