Generally it's a good list, it seems like you have included most of the top fighters at first glance. I could nit-pick at certain things, but I feel that the placing of Benn and Eubank is the biggest concern, due to Eubank being 9 places ahead of Benn (I can't really separate them, but if I had to I would put Benn over Eubank). I just feel Benn is being underrated and Eubank slightly overrated. But like I said, good list IMO :good
Got to say that was the one thing that jumped out at me as well. I wouldn't argue about how you wanted to place those two in relation to each other but can't see that they should be 9 places apart in either direction. I'd also question the exclusion of Haye, on achievement alone, when looking at a few of the names near the bottom of the list. Nice work though. :good
Wow, I was not excpecting Benn to be a major issue??? What in your mind(s) makes Benn so close to or even above Eubank??? Eubank holds a stoppage win over him, 2 wins over Watson who beat Benn...How come no one is saying watson should be over Benn, to be honest that is one I am struggeling with..What makes Benn higer ranked than Watson??? Do you feel Benn's resume outside of watson is that superior to Eubank??? I really don't want to make this into a Benn-Eubank debate, as I was wondering more about the overall rankings (Welsh is a bit low from Lora's perspective???), but what is it that makes Benn so comprable to Eubank???
Yep good point on Haye. Feel that John H, Green, Sibson, Andries, Nelson and Cowdell all have a shout as well. I think this thread may give me the drive to do my own list :yep
No disrespect to Haye, but I was trying to stay away from fighters who are still active (at least in a major way)...Like on my HW list I do include Holyfield, but not either Klit...not out of disrespect, but rather I am not sure we or more to the point I can rank them fairly without seeing the entire body of work..I imagine Haye will find himself on many lists of this type in the future!!!
benn to low ,berg about right,i would possibly have kid lewis top but that would likely change month from month
Fitz ain't really British. His biggest achievment came when he was an American citizen. British fighters in my top 100 Jim Driscoll Jimmy Wilde Lennox Lewis Jack Kid Berg Ted Kid Lewis Freddie Welsh Benny Lynch Boxers that narrowly miss out on ATG status but have good HTH intangibles; Calzaghe, Buchanan,Conteh, Hamed, McGowan. Quality fighters; everyone else I've missed (Moran for example) that is in the OP's post. None of the above are in order.
I think Walter McGowan should have a spot in there, hes every bit as good as Michael watson or Tomm Farr, even IMO Naseem Hamed, who I think is too high on your list. I'd also squeeze in Alan Rudkin, absoloutly class operater and every bit as good as some guys on that list. My only other gripe is it is 'Jackie Paterson' not 'Peterson', I'm nit picking because my last name is also Paterson
The wins over MClellan and other decent Yanks like Barkley, Sims and DeWitt put Benn over Eubank in my book. Eubanks record doesn't have enough outside Benn and Watson IMHO.
in 89 Benn breaks into the ring rankings at 9, but loses to #6 Watson. in 90 Benn beats dewitt for the WBO MW title, #5 Barkley & loses to #6 Eubank. Eubank beats WBO champ..year closes with eubank rated 6 & Benn 9. 91- Eubank beats #8 Watson 2X's (disputed or not these are the results) defending the WBO MW title and winning the WBO SMW title in the return bout. rated #3 at SMW Benn- does not have a major fight and ends up #6 at SMW 92- Eubank beats #8 Thorton and makes 5 defenses. Benn beats Galvano for the WBC strap and makes defense. Eubank rated #3 Benn #5 93- both make 2 defenses and fight to a draw... Eubank rated #3 Benn #4 94- Benn makes 2 defenses...Eubank makes 6 defenses and beats #8 & #9 ranked close and Rocchigiani Benn ranked 2 Eubank 3 (not sure why Benn jumped him this year, but he did) 95- Benn beats McClellan and makes 3 defenses..Eubank loses to #3 Collins 2X's benn rated 2 Eubank falls out 96 Neither guy is ever a factor again! (Although Eubank does come bak into the ratings in 97) Benn rates at 9-9-6-5-4-2-2 (rated 7 years top 5 4 X's) Eubank rates *-6-3-3-3-3-*-9(rated 6 years top 5 4X's) during the 5 years they were rated Eubank was higher 4 of those years Benn 4-2-1 against ranked opponents (not counting 96+) Eubank 6-2-1 (with his losses coming in his final year as a peak fighter to collins) Eubank 18-2-1 in title fights (0-3 96 on) Benn 11-5 in title fights Benn WBO MW Champ 4 months (loses title to Eubank) Eubank WBO MW Champ 11 months (Vacates) Benn- WBC SMW Champ 3 years 5 months Eubank- WBO SMW Champ 3 years 6 months I agree there is not a great disparity, but Eubank to me clearly rates ahead of Benn! Beat more rated opposition, had a longer reign and made more defenses and had a better record in title fights, rated higher 4 of 5 years when both were ranked...and won the H2H encounter to seal the deal for me!
