This is probably the most violent fantasy fight that can be imagined in the filmed era. The filthy, consistently aggressive Armstrong versus the filthy, consistently aggressive Sandy Saddler.

Armstrong has enjoyed the cleaner run to the final. He smashed out George Dixon by knockout in the first round, dispatched Terry McGovern in four rounds in the quarter-final and then turned in that incredible points victory over Willie Pep. Armstrong has pretty much breezed his way to the final without any all-time great featherweight meaningfully extending him.

Sandy Saddler meanwhile, has struggled. He went the full fifteen in eliminating Kid Chocolate in the first round; struggled desperately with Alexis Arguello in a war and the tournament's best fight in the quarter-final; fought a bloody, desperate battle with Sal Sanchez in the semi-final receiving another arguable decision. No knockout victories for the all-time featherweight knockout king!

But the form doesn't matter now. Both well and rested, Armstrong faces down Saddler ring-centre. We're seconds from bell.

Interesting fight here, from a styles standpoint. I can't think of anyone particularly close to Armstrong who Saddler beat (although I'm not convinced it didn't happen, of course) and the only guy I think of with Saddler-esc power who Armstrong beat was Davis, who had virtually no application.

I reckon this is a gore-filled war. High output, tons landed and I imagine tons of savage dirty infighting. I'd back Hank as the stronger guy and he has the higher workrate. His infighting is more refined too; his smothering was super effective. I think he has the tools to beat Saddler in a war, but my entire prediction comes down to whether Armstrong can take Saddler's power, and I think he can. Armstrong UD.

Armstrong did hang tough with Garcia, a beast who KO'd top middleweights, albeit they didn't fight at 126.

Armstrong would match Saddler's roughhouse tactics (low) blow for (low) blow, and top them with a better workrate and punch output. Saddler obviously will be a major KO threat throughout, though I think Hank is tough enough to ride out any danger. It will be a vicious war between two physical freaks and I think Armstrong edges it.

I would have liked to put forth an analysis, but I could not have put it any better than this. Great post, George.

For me it's actually an easy pick.

Saddlers main strengths are his size, his power and his infighting ability.

Armstrong is superior in all 3 categories for my money. He's probably the strongest, hardest hitting, best in fighter the division has ever seen.

Even chin, I give an edge to Armstrong who was never stopped in his prime.

Even heart and grit, Armstrong had to swallow his own blood to avoid making a mess so the ref wouldn't stop one of his fights, that kinda testicular fortitude is incredible.

I take Armstrong in a momentum shifting fight, to pound out a 10-5 type decision.

I’ll say it was Zivic’s size and not just his dirtiness that got the job done against Armstrong.

I’ll take Armstrong to prevail over 15. If in some bizarre time machine scenario he actually took his fight in his prime, my assumption is that he wouldn’t have racked up the career he did. Saddler was a truly brutal man, but Armstrong takes it for me.

You think Armstrong hit harder than Saddler at 126?

So so I, out of about 127 winning fights Saddler stopped or KOd 104 , pretty big punching in my world.

I like Saddler in this one. Saddler is above Zivic in everything and even if you discount the size advantage and even things up more Zivic really put it on him. Saddler does it better.

I think Saddler would win pretty clean. I don't think Armstrong would like what he got from Saddler as he consistently bored inside, I think he would get handled there - too small, nothing like the experience he would gain at the highest level; never defeated a fighter of the class of Saddler in his career by this point and Saddler has to me what looks like a significant style advantage to go with significant size and experience advantages.

I'll pick Armstrong to tough it home in a bloodbath dropping a wide decision.

Sooo hard but ,,I think Saddler was the better featherweight,,by a thin but perceptible margin, as Mike Cannon pointed out he had 104 ko's in 127 wins.
