Golovkin wouldn’t be on here because he never really attempted, someone like Donaire, yes he was world champion at several weights, but just wasn’t anywhere near the same force, not people who moved up far too much, people who were nerfed as soon as they moved up, within a weight class or 2.
Who are some of your picks?

He was an old fighter when he went up to face Canelo, the champion, at 168. How is that not attempting?

He never tested himself at 168lbs in his prime, so we don’t know if he’d’ve been successful then or not.

Winky when he foolishly hopped up two divisions (really 3 because he wasn't even really a MW he was just dabbling) to fight the LHW incarnation of Bernard. That basically ended his career.

That’s the point of the thread though, what great fighters at/near their peak attempted to move up, but failed because they couldn’t do it at the higher weight, we don’t know if Golovkin was ‘nerfed’ when he moved up since he was washed up anyway.

168 was a wasteland for most of Golovkin's career. He did actually do 168 as an amateur and spanked some big names. I think he'd have been ok.

Saddler - a consensus top 2 FW all-time, but lost about as often as he won up @135.

Zarate - got spanked by Gomez just 4 pounds north of his division & immediately dropped back down.

Foster was a lot like Saddler in that regard - they had freakish power w/in their own weight class, but vs. larger opponents who could withstand their power, they lacked other means to win.

I don't think it's fair to put Griffith on this list - he was still a great or near-great fighter up @MW w/ wins over multiple HoFers at the weight.

I think Napoles' problem was that he had already moved up from 135/140 to win the WW title, which made the leap to 160 even more problematic than it would've been for a more natural WW.
