I believe one of the best ways to judge if a fighter is an ATG is by looking at their championship records. Most fighters early fights are filled with fluff, learning how to fight, stay busy fights, etc. I think world title fights are a better comparison. I think this shows us that the current crop have a long way to go to becoming ATGs! You have to look at who a guy beat and how he beat him. You have to consider when he beat that fighter... prime, near prime, past-prime, injured, etcetera. Look at the losses as well... who did he lose to and how? Was it a bad decision? Was he past-prime or possibly pre-prime when he lost that fight? Louis, W. Klitschko, Ali, and Holmes all had over 20 wins in HW world title fights but Ali fought the best competition of the group.
Holyfield beat more lineal HW champs than any other fighter. He beat Foreman, Holmes, Tyson x2, Douglas, Bowe, Moorer, and Rahman. He had a draw with Lewis. 8-4-1 (3) vs. these men. I thought his first fight with Moorer was a draw. I thought he lost the first fight with Lewis but I thought the rematch was a draw. He was obviously not at his best vs. Moorer (1st fight) or Bowe (3rd fight). He was pretty well past-prime when he fought Lewis. Louis beat lineal HW Champs Schmeling, Sharkey, Carnera, Baer, Braddock, and Walcott x2. He lost to lineal HW champs Charles and Marciano. He went 7-3 (6) vs. these men. I thought Walcott beat him in their first fight. Louis was well past-prime vs. Walcott, Charles, and Marciano. He had yet to peak when he fought Schmeling the first time.
