no, toney is the most overated boxer ever. hopkins has amazing longevity but the bottom line is that hopkins has never beaten an elite fighter at a fair weight, and when he did step up to fight the elite guys at fair weights (jones, taylor, calzaghe) he lost the fights. mayweather is the superior fighter by a distance imo.
I'm so sick and ****ing tired of reading this statement. It's like the generic: "I don't like the guy one bit, and I need to discredit the fact that he has never lost." Plus the fact that these people can't ever tell you who Floyd supposedly ducked. It generally includes some or all of: Casamayor, Frietas, Lazcano, Johnston, Mosley, Tszyu, Cotto, Margarito, Clottey, Pacquiao, and Sergio. Despite that almost every one of those would've either made no sense due to weight classes, coming off losses, promotional disagreements, or fighters turning Floyd down.
Sure he did  I guess he was just 'acting' once again when he was calling out Roy to his face over and over but 'captain hook' was much more content with fighting Glen Kelly and Clinton Woods. Ducked Joe Calzaghe? he wanted more money something camp Calzaghe wasn't willing to give him, I believe they offered him an odd $3 million to come fight Joe at SMW when he was on his way to solidifying his status as an ATG MW and the bout was due for early 2003 but in 2004 Hopkins got a fight with Oscar where he collected in the region of 10-15 million. And what's funniest about this whole ridiculous 'ducking' argument is that Hopkins eventually fought Calzaghe anyway atsch Yeah the same way Mayweather ducked Amir Khan Yeah he ducked Dawson despite agreeing to fight him when he could have vacated his WBC title and gone and got payed taking an easy fight with Cleverly or even Shumenov collecting another belt but instead agreed to fight Dawson then he supposedly quit but then once again agreed to a rematch atsch You're so full of **** I can smell it from here.:deal
Most ******ed arguement people can bring up is "Floyd beat more champions" Thats because Hopkins WAS the champion, not his fault he beat all comers and not cherry pick soft touches to gain more titles (not saying thats the only thing Floyd did but it happened a few times) Personally i put Hopkins ahead by a smidge, but thats mostly because i do not really put that much value on class jumping more on dominating a division. I also did not see Hopkins duck as much especially not during his prime. Also Floyd does not nearly have Hopkins like longevity. Floyd does have time on his side though and if he wants he can overtake Hopkins but i put Hopkins ahead currently. Also its HIGHLY convenient for people to say they put more emphasis on skill than resume, resume is the result of skill. Basing p4p ranking purely on skill is highly subjective when that skill has not been proven as much especially not against different styles of opponant. I can see how Floyd obsessives would put forth that arguement though seeing how Floyd has benefited immensly from careful matchmaking once he moved up from 130.
If Floyd is still winning world titles at 46, then I'll vote for him. Until then, Bernard wins it and its not even close.
Who did Floyd cherry pick for his titles? Serious question. Belts Floyd won: 1998- Lineal and WBC 130 lb. titles from Genaro Hernandez 2002- Lineal and WBC 135 lb. titles from Jose Luis Castillo 2005- WBC 140 lb. title from Arturo Gatti 2006- IBF 147 lb. title from Zab Judah 2006- Lineal and WBC 147 lb. titles from Carlos Baldomir 2007- WBC 154 lb. title from Oscar de la Hoya 2011- WBC 147 lb. title from Victor Ortiz 2012- WBA 154 lb. title from Miguel Cotto * The Zab Judah fight is the only one which what you say is actually true. That was a hardcore bogus title, but, in Floyds' defense, he gave it up immediately without defending it.
You guys are insane. A few years back, Floyd ducked the top 3 guys in his division: Cotto, Williams and Margarito. He also ducked Kostya Tsyu. Hopkins never ducked anyone.
Stephen Edwards answerd this in a good post and hes a bit of a Floyd hugger himself. Explains it a lot better than i ever could.
I'm going with equal. Mayweather is a ****ing beast, regardless of what the haters say. he had one controversial win, that he rematched like a real champ should, and he fought the biggest names at their weights. his corner is also the best the game has seen. he is the favorite in every fight for a reason. Hopkins however, has done what very few boxers in the history of the game have done, and that's consistently beat top fighters without being significantly faster or stronger than most of them.
