Jimmy Bivins, seed 7, takes to the ring in his prime. Jimmy was the fighter's fighter, a toughman who fought the best in history on a month by month basis and in 1946 he beat Archie Moore, in 1943 he beat Ezzard Charles. The man was a force to be reckoned with, and had frightening power. He iced Marshall and Moore, and had Charles down 5 times in total. A bizarre fighter to watch; long arms but rarely used his reach. Which is weird, since he had a damn good jab and fast feet. An aggressive stalker with a cute defence and an exuberant array of feints. He was also physically very strong, and huge for the weight. A duration champ, but with wins over Charles, Moore, Burley, Marshall, Maxim, Lesenvich, Sheppard and another 30 contenders or so. Very underrated fighter. His chin was granite and his body attack was ferocious, he set a high pace, countered shots he avoided and wore people down. His squat stature and bob and weave made his 5'6 frame work in a division of giants. The mastery of avoiding punches were glorious to watch, and was on full display in his second piecing of Saad Muhammad. It's a sad watch, but an ATG performace. I generally think that few light heavies in history top Qawi in a head-to-head, but this is probably one of the few. Bivins by hard-fought decision. He had all the tools rather than depending on just a couple real strengths, which is what it would take to beat Qawi.
I gotta go with Bivins. I think his style would be great for beating Qawi. I see Qawi winning early rounds and Bivins winning mid-late rounds.
Bivins, never defeated at 175, by close hard fought decision. Qawi would force his workrate up and i think Bivins would get the better of it. Bivins power good not great for mine and i don't see Qawi in any danger of being stopped.
Bump, I like Qawi here, too vicious and slick. He'd get under the slower Bivins' jab, and go to the body. Bivins might be able to push him back, time his uppercut and make a good account of himself, but I like Qawi's movement and ability to really take it here. Bivins was really strong though, he'd give Qawi serous issues. Qawi on points.
I might lean slightly towards Qawi, but with no real conviction. Both excellent fighters. Having grown up watching what a relentless beast Qawi could be has swayed me to his corner. But, admittedly, I have seen way more of Qawi than Bivins (who I have mostly only read about).
And so Qawi advances into the next stage, after a rough and tumble 15 rounds with 'Duration champ' Jimmy Bivins. His quicker jab and deliberate body attack let him tick over more rounds and he showed yet again that he is unfazed by the bigger guy.
