Or does what you do outside the ring have a bearing. e.g. Ali in a positive way or tyson in a negative way.
Only what happens in the ring. And I seriously question anyone for any other opinion than that. You factor in the era immensely, obviously, but not things like "oh, well, he couldn't have fought any of the best ranked fighters because they were black and the color line existed." Too bad for all of them. You judge who they fought and how they performed.
Taking PEDs like Jones Jr, Toney, Mosley, etc did should be exempt from the Hall of Fame. Let alone being called an ATG. :-(
gotta differ with you on this one nonito. i think it SHOULD have a bearing and i think with most people, it does. do you think ali would be ranked as high as he is if he didnt object to the vietnam war and if he didnt have charisma ?
Ali was different. His fame extends well beyond boxing. He was literally 1 in a billion and his fame outgrew boxing. Outside the ring Tyson was like Joe Louis, average.
Uhhhhh, yeah! I think if people factored in out-of-ring happenings, social stances, and politics... then everyone would rank Joe Louis as the clear cut P4P GOAT.
ali was voted number 1 greatest sportsman of all time in an extensive uk show which polled its viewers.
ali is way more well-known than joe louis and its not because of ali's in-ring abilities and achievemnts, its irrefutable.
Okayyyyy. And your point is? Joe Louis "broke the color line" to win the HW title, lived an outwardly squeaky clean image (which at the time was both highly positive and highly relevant for the sports' and country's getting beyond racial boundaries), took part in and won the largest politically impacting sporting event in history, joined the military during WW II, donated the entirety of his purse for two of his HW title defenses to the Navy Relief Fund for WW II, etc. Just because people know more about Ali than Louis doesn't make their claims more correct. There is someone out there, probably a whole lot of someones, who would claim Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has had the better career than Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. That wouldn't be because it's true, it would be because JCC Jr. is 10X more known than Wonjongkam to certain parts of the world. Once again, what is your point in the post I quoted? UK sporting polls ranked Floyd Mayweather, Lennox Lewis, and Joe Calzaghe as top 10 ATG boxers. What does that mean?
But people who know the credentials of both or either generally don't factor anything other than those sporting credentials when debating who has the best sporting credentials, as is the case for an "ATG Ranking list of boxers."
Which sporting polls were this? The one I'm referring to went through each sport. Sugar Ray Robinson came 2nd in boxing. Roy jones was the only modern boxer in the boxers short list of 10. That's my point. WHY is Ali more popular???
Interesting thought. 98%+ of non-trolls would disagree with you but isn't that the beauty of an opinion...
Your "greatest sportsman" poll you referenced... factors in ability and accomplishment, yes? Well then, OK, there you go. I told you that UK fans believe Calzaghe, Lennox, and Mayweather are all top 10 ATG's so that alone, along with a laundry list of other polls and discussions, makes me not exactly value their opinion of sporting accomplishments.
