Dude I got all his fights......in fact I think I was the one that listed the link to this You Tube fights of SAL, ALL THEY DO IS REITERATED HIS CHIN...Getting rock and not dropping is the essence of a great chin...specially at this lighter weights
No, it's the essence of having good recooperation skills and boxing instinct, not a great chin. Guys like Hagler, McCullough, LaMotta, etc, guys who took HUGE punches CLEAN and were not even rocked are the true granite chins.
Go recovery sure..yet it is a good chin that can take a shot and disoriented you and you keep going....I will say this , as a boxer, I will say that a good chin , as you guys see it, trnaslate to good balance....example is Jake LaMotta , when hurt he stayed on the ropes, yet other boxers like SAL OPTED TO KEEP EXCHANGING BLOWS UNTIL THEY HAD THEIR LEGS .....
Robinson was dropped in his welterweight title bout by Tommy Bell, and also by middleweights Levine and LaMotta. Anyway, I need to do more research and watch more highlights before coming up with a definitive list. There's too many factors that come into play.
You re kidding, as I m entioned, Jake LaMotta opted to stay on the ropes or hold rather than keep banging
Mccall has to be on the list, he has never been down in the amateurs or pro, hes been a pro for over 22 years without going to down. He took heavy on heavy hitters like Buster Douglas, Lewis, Williamson, Maskaev, and Bruno. This is not a top 10 chin list without the "Atomic Bull"
Well I made my list from the top of my head, and if I research a little more, I doubt it that my list will change...
Ok then, out of curiousity, why is McCullough not listed? Or McCall (though at least McCall was rocked once)
LaMotta took some of the hardest clean shots I've ever seen from some great punchers like Robinson in 6 fights, never once dropped, and I'm talking combos straight to the jaw. He lasted the fight with a Heavyweight BOMBER in Bob Satterfield. He was beaten on, not rocked, just taking a beating, similar to how someone like Chuvalo did.
Best fighters aren't always the best punchers. But it's your list. Anyone who takes flush shots from Hamed and Morales (especially Hamed) is on any great chins list. Especially over guys who have been down multiple times. McCall fought some heavy hitters as well.
You talk like I never watch those fights...I ahve many time....at times I taught that Chuvalo wa out on his feet...and someties we forget the level of activity of this boxers when we tink they have a great chin and the Refs wll give them lead way.... Sure Morales did well, very welll
I don;t considered McCall era, a heavy hitter era in HW's...DeVaryel, Bruno, Buster is not the same as Shavers, Foreman, Frazier., Norton....
