Who are the top ten most Knowledgeable, insightfull or just plain popular Classic posters in this forum.
Sweet Pea is a knowledgeable historian & John Garfield seen with his own eyes guys like SRR at welter & Pep pre plane crash.
Here's the thing - you might have one or two guys you could mention, but ten is almost impossible. That's because, like any list, it gets softer the lower it goes. There really would be no difference between your number 8 and your number 13, if you could be bothered to make such a list! I'll mention Janitor because he illuminates an area of boxing that i am interested in but not well versed in, barenuckle - 1910, very well and referenced. Stonehands89 on account of I like reading what he writes, and oftentimes we agree on details. MyDinnerWithConteh because when he can be bothered to talk boxing he presents a reasonably objective front and is often well sourced, and those sources are often interesting. Sweet Pea is my favourite guy to talk boxing with. There are way more than 6 others I could mention but i'm stopping at 4.
Top 4 IMO (not in order): Sweet Pea, Mantequilla, McGrain, The Cobra. There are many great posters with supreme knowledge on this forum though. I would like to thank them all! Great forum!
Do you see this Sweet Pea? This is why you always come second when they do a poll in general Be nice. Thanks chum, I love you too.
Sweet Pea would not be the glorious poster that he is if he curbed the absolutely evil one-liners to the General Forum goons. I enjoy them immensely!!
i think most posters on here are high quality (especially Longcounts (see abit of word play there)) seriously its a high standard forum theres afew guys who are very knowledgeable and post alot your McGrains, Sweet Peas etc... then you got the amazing posters who post rarely but when they do its like the world turns upside down like John garfield, Stonehands89 then you have the normal guys who are all very knowledgeable as well and speak great boxing and are good people as well then you have the annoying people but i wont mention them then theres russel
Some of my favorites ( though I don't think its fair to credit anyone as being better than the other.. We're all equals here. ) In no particular order: - John Thomas - Old ESB friend of mine and a rather balanced poster with good knowledge of the 1980's scene. - Janitor - Don't always agree, but is a true gentleman, and is well schooled in classic greats. - Old Fogey - Shows us a lot of good angles on fighters' stats and history. - McGrain - With 25,000 posts in only two years, how can't you like him? - Cross Trainer - No longer active, but was great in his day.. Has never truly been replaced. - Chris Pontius - Can really break down a good argument and uses a very reasonable approach to different issues. - Stone Hands - A gentleman and knows as much about boxing as anybody. - McVey - Has corrected me a few times on some very good points where I was a tad off. - Sweat Pea - We don't really post on many of the same topics, nor cross paths very often in conversation, but he seems to be fairly popular.. - Dinner with Conteh - Love the man's humor and knowledge on the 70's heavyweights. - Russell - A fine poster who sometimes puts together some fun fantasty matchups, and does a good job of digging up some forgotten records. - Duodenum - AKA " Dean. " Love the way he words his posts. A very well educated poster. That's about it for now, but I like many others..
I'll stick to McGrain's (who I'll just mention here as one of the best) philosophy. I'm only mentioning the posters I look up to and salute: Raging B(_)LL- Among the top 5 in terms of posting and writing ability and top 3 in terms of all around (all eras and weight classes) knowledge of modern boxing history. Mantequilla- Probably the poster whose posts I follow most closely. His opinions are probably the most genuine to me (he always knows what he's taking about, and he knows a lot), even when he half-asses his points. META5- Very rarely posts these days, but when he finds the time his posts are among the best and most insightful I've ever read. Stonehands89- Quite simply the most difficult man to beat in an argument on ESB. He's kind of like an older, far more mature version of me in that we both treat posters as they deserve to be treated. john garfield- Another one of the most personally knowledgable posters, having seen it all from the days of Ray Robinson to now in person. sweet_scientist- One of the most well rounded posters on the forum, in pretty much every way.
Stonehands89. Sweetpea has became a solid poster, knowledge wise........But changed dramatically in another area. Personally speaking, I think most people are decent posters. The Classic Forum doesn't contain much nonsense. Rooster is biased and talks some nonsense, but can put a decent post together and knows his stuff. If he wasn't as biased, he'd be doing himself a favour. I don't post too often, although I like to think of myself as above average. Considering how long I've been on here, around 2002, nothing much to shout about when it comes to blowing my own trumpet.
