I think it's pretty close if you include guys like Frankie Randall, Mario Martinez, Lonnie Smith and Tony Lopez. Could also add some more guys like Gamache.

Who ranks higher? Chavez for me. A bit more consistent and a bit more well rounded to deal with all styles.

Arguello IMO, although I would say they are very close.

Same reason there's no Pernell Whitaker or Oscar de la Hoya for Chavez.

Arguello fought his share of cans; mostly other prospects and journeyman when he was young. Arguello's early career has little resemblance to his prime years.

I finally agree with Asero but suprise suprise it happens to be one of the closest matches & hardest to pick ones.

There is not a great deal between Arguello & Chavez, I went with Chavez because he had fewer losses near his prime vs guys that he should be destroying.
Alexis lost some pretty stupid decisions around his prime yrs albeit non-title ones + was KOd early on in his career, it must count against him when comparing to a guy that never had anything like that happen to him in Chavez.

Arguello. Better resume and with a higher skill level.

Chavez was a fantastic in-fighter and is in my top 20.

Alexis had a fantastic jab, one of the most devestating right hands in history, fluid and inventive combinations...was tactically superior also.

One thing both fighters have in common; were known to struggle with 'pure' boxers. Liked guys who came to fight, even if they both dealt with it in different ways.

Chavez is in your top 20 and yet Arguello is ranked higher? Just how high is Alexis in your list?

I don't include Randall, as it wasn't a legitimate win in my eyes, or most that I know. I could add a few of those guys, but I'd then have to add a few more for Arguello, and none of the wins would really be improving their placing. Arguello's top wins are clearly superior IMO, though they were pretty much on the same level as fighters.

Boo, Arguello lost to Marcel, I was only counting his wins.

I have no problems with the placement..its close for me also but I have Arguello ahead.

But Chavez did not face anyone who was going to threaten him early in his career..his record was proper padded pretty much until the day he went to fight for the title.

Whereas Arguello had some wins over a legend at the weight and top contenders before he beat Olivares.

I have not seen all of the the Fernandez fight but I have seen a bit of Fernandez..He was very good defensive fighter, excellent mover which is not a style Alexis always liked and especially not when he was moving up to fight him. Fernandez went 13 with Duran and many feel was jobbed against Davis...Alexis avenged that loss later aswell. Really his only blip in his prime.
I truly believe that the late 70's version of Fernandez would have been a very hard fight for JCC aswell..especially over 10.
