He beat 2 greater fighters overall. Floyd has by far beaten the deeper opposition. In a fight by fight basis, Floyds resume is better. Floyds 130 and 135lb resume is arguably better then Morales whole career. You could make the case that Chavez and Hernandez were probably in the top 5 of Morales best victories. Those were nothing fights for Mayweather.

Still, the idea that Erik Morales is underrated is laughable.

So at least we are all in agreement that Morales has two wins way better than anything on Mayweather's resume: Pacquiao 1 & Barrera 1. :good

Morales rides on a wave of goodwill on this forum like no other fighter. The General neutrals absolutely adore him, which is understandable.

Taking into account the versions of the fighters defeated, my lists would probably look like the following...

    Floyd Mayweather Jr

    1. Jose Luis Castillo
    2. Oscar De La Hoya
    3. Diego Corrales
    4. Ricky Hatton
    5. Shane Mosley

I don't rank Hoya, Hatton, or Mosley as being particuarly outstanding victories. Hoya and Mosley were not at their best, and Hatton was seen to be an average Welterweight at best as he went life and death with Luis Collazo. Castillo was a better fighter than Corrales during their respective peaks, in my opinion, hence giving the nod to Castillo.

    Erik Morales

    1. Manny Pacquiao
    2. Marco Antonio Barrera
    3. Jesus Chavez
    4. Carlos Hernandez
    5. In Jin Chi

Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera, two legitimate ATGs, were both at their best when Morales defeated them. Two of the best victories of the last 15 years. Chavez and Hernandez were both world champions, and Morales was moving up to fight each of them. Admittedly, the quality of the fighters after the top two are below par in comparison to Floyd's top 5.

I must admit, after having a rethink, you probably would have to credit Floyd Mayweather as having the deeper and more impressive resume.

The next 5 for each men could possibly look like the following...

Mayweather Jr: Zab Judah, Genaro Hernandez, Victor Ortiz, Carlos Hernandez, Jesus Chavez.

Morales: Kevin Kelly, Junior Jones, Paulie Ayala, Daniel Zaragoza, Wayne McCullough

That looks incredibly impressive on paper, but Kelly, Jones, and Zaragoza were at the tail end of their careers. Ayala was fighting above his optimal weight class, and was much the smaller man on the night. :think

Indeed. Mayweather Jr does have the deeper and more impressive resume. I stand corrected.

I suppose it's a matter of depth VS peak accomplishments. Each had both, but each had one far better than the other did.

Given the choice, I'd prefer to have the likes of MAB and MP on my resume rather than a host of great opponents who were past their peak. Still, Floyd's depth really is hard to argue with in this particular discussion. Morales' win column doesn't really have depth.

So you mean to say that the other 3 wins of Gayweather actually sucked.

Hatton - best junirowelterweight, was fought at welterweight.

Mosley and Hoya were so past it. I would even laugh it someone gives credit to Pac for these wins.

that's why more half of the people are seeing morales as a greater fighter. morales fights ATG fighters in their peak/prime. meanwhile, the first time floyd has a chance to fight an ATG in his prime, he pulled out the "additional test" excuse and the "vacation/lost my urge" excuse.
