Calzaghe with ease. Lopez is beautiful to watch, but he could have accomplished so much more in his career.

im starting to appreciate calzaghe when i compare him to lopez...hey, people ranked lopez ahead of dela hoya and even zarate.. now i am convinced that those that put calzaghe outside the top 100 is really baised towards him

Neither guy has the deepest resume, so I can only judge on their ability.
For me, it's Lopez. He was probably the most technically perfect fighter I've ever seen. He was a more well-rounded fighter than Joe and I'd pick him to beat any Strawweight in history.
Both guys would be in my top 100 but there's no doubt I'd have Lopez higher.

Lopez for me. Very close call though.

Lopez's win over Sorjatorung improved with age, his win over Alvarez was the acid test that proved his greatness.

By comparison, Calzaghe's resume is slightly better.

But Lopez was a far more skilled and more complete fighter. Had Calzaghe fought the real Hopkins and Jones, he would've been thoroughly outclassed. No-one at Lopez's weights would do that to him.

Just like Mayweather v De La Hoya, this is one of the very rare occasions where I rank the fighter with the weaker resume higher in terms of greatness.

the problem with alvarez is that he is borderline HOF fighter more so ATG...if that be the case, lopez would be the only fighter in the ATG to have never fought fellow ATG..

calzaghe has fights with eubank and hopkins

lopez is the hardest mexican to rank...some say he is top 3 and to some he is no way in the top 8..still, others say the MAB, EM and JMM are better than Lopez

Oscar De La Hoya is not Mexican, so why would I include him in my list of top Mexicans? Your top 5 is good, though personally I would have Miguel Canto above both Lopez and Zarate.

Calzaghe's fight with Eubank means nothing. Eubank is nothing like an ATG, but even then he was so far past-prime when Calzaghe fought him that it is not a great win by any means. Actually look into Eubank's career and the circumstances surrounding that fight - it is the most overrated and misremembered fight in recent boxing history.

OK, Lopez never beat another ATG - did Mike Tyson??

There were far more big names available for Calzaghe to fight 1997-2008 than there were for Lopez at his weights in the 90s, and Joe still never fought any till they were in their 40s.
