to help us in making our list of top 100 ATG, i think it would be a good idea to make this poll to see where to place these boxers in the ATG list. i rank morales higher that gomez
Both are easy top 5 at 122 & most rank Gomez as the best ever at 122 which was also Morales best weight. Sounds like a Gomez pick right ? Dont be so sure because remember how mediocre Wilfredo looked up at just 126 lbs, Morales stepped up to 126 & 130 lbs very successfully, even managing to achieve the no1 ranking in all 3 weight classes (122, 126, 130.)
Wilfredo Gomez, of course. No offense to Morales, but Gomez is in a completely different, higher class than him. Gomez, at 122 was in a p4p class all to himself. He would have disposed of Morales as decisively as he did Zarate, maybe in 6 or 7 rounds, maybe sooner.
Nostalgia. Nobody makes short work of Erik at 122, and Zarate was moving up from Bantam for the first time, and it showed. Erik was a fully fledged 122lb fighter during his prime, and he had speed and power to give Gomez troubles. Wilfredo wins a competitive war.
Zarate fit 122 pounds just fine and was a better fighter than Morales, he was just outclassed that night.
I think Morales stops Zarate at 122lb. Carlos best work was done at Bantamweight, and this should not be overlooked when considering this. Gomez does not blow out Morales at 122.
What also should not be overlooked is Zarate's performance post-Gomez against Lupe Pintor, another fighter I rank higher than Morales at 122. Morales isn't as good as you guys are making him out, or as he's made out in general (same with Barrera). He was a very good offensive fighter who was lacking on the defensive end and could get too easily drawn into a war. Against a superior boxer-puncher technician in Zarate (and a bigger puncher at that) I don't think that plays into his hands very well when discussing a matchup between the two. I'd take Zarate by close decision or late stoppage as I see Morales eating too many shots.
Zarate was not in the fight that night at all, but I certaintly don't put it down to not fitting the weight. Gomez does spooked him that night, and it's easy to see why. When you're something like 54-0 (53) and there's a kid who's got all K.O's, he's super fast, he has superior footwork, every time you try to cut the ring off you figure out he's already doing it to you, counter-punches well, hits harder..... Zarate would beat Morales in much the same way that Sweet Pea predicted. Morales would be game but Zarate is one of the hardest hitters P4P of all time. Gomez would stop Morales at 122. The Gomez that beat Zarate would do it efficiently and without fuss. The Gomez that fought Pintor would make for a much more entertaining fight, and I think, behind on the cards to Morales, Gomez strikes up a late rally and stops Morales who is sat on the ropes and shipping heavy punishment.
