ATG: Who Ranked Higher, Oscar De La Hoya or James Toney?

Both are multi division champions and have been p4p top fighters..

    Who should be ranked higher?

James Toney was a better fighter IMO, Oscar is more famous & has a bigger fan base tho but to me that dont mean ****, Toney was more skilled.

Toney more skilled, but Oscar was more consistent in his day.

Toney will have good wins in every weight division he has fought in, but losses he shouldn't have as well.

Both were equipped with great chins, although Toney took bigger hits on his and was less mobile (basically a short fat guy fighting at Heavy out of nessecity)

Best win; De La Hoya's was probably the Quartey fight (not including the Tito robbery of course) and Toney's was probably the Nunn fight.

I say James Toney, by one or two places. Still haven't finished my top 100 post-war P4P list for exactly these kind of conundrums; been trying to figure out who is higher between Flash Elorde and Ricardo Lopez for some time now............both in the 75-90 bracket.

I can't help but think their respective fame levels have an influence on peoples opinions here. Both are at a very similar level to me, and I think you'll either get casual fans say DLH as he's the "face" of boxing, or the hardcore boxing fans vote Toney in a sort of affirmitive action sense, to even out the fact that he hasn't had the coverage that DLH has.

Personally I don't think there's a wrong answer here, But I'll plump for DLH.

    Oscar no doubt.

    I think he is overrated..

But Toney and Bowe are the two most overrated fighters in history.

    Oscar.

He was not so skilled, but had a better career: beat more contenders and better fighters overall.

Oscar beat more top-tier opponents and when he lost, he lost by just a hair. Even against Shane and Floyd he lost by 2 points. His only KO losses were on a body shot against BHop in a fight he was winning on points on my card, and against Pacman which is a negligible fight since he was completely shot and disinterested.

Toney was humiliated by Roy Jones.

I say De La Hoya - better wins over better fighters. Toney's shoulder roll and counter punching was a joy to watch at his peak, but he wasted the talent he had with his shocking lack of discipline.

The Jones debacle was humiliating for him, and was himself responsible for part of it.

I still dont think Toney gets enough credit for going up to heavyweight

jones gets all the credit in the world for beating ruiz, toney beat ruiz, holyfield, rahmann, got the better of sam peter when he was good

Hmm, this is a very difficult question when just directly comparing them. As fleaman said, there are a slew of variables in this comparison. Toney deserves credit for being a player at Heavyweight, much higher than his peak weight. Oscar, on the other hand, has a more consistent record, I believe.

Edit: If pushed, I'd pick Oscar.
