If one is voting as to who was the greatest at their peak, I can see that. But Hopkins clearly had the better career, and on that basis should be rated more highly on ATG lists.
The question is ungrateful (as a question Ali or Louis, for example). The would not be convincining but the nuances would be decide. They are both great boxers, and their careers have been long. The charisma factor should be included in the answer. Hopkins won the title at 46 years old. In the case of Jones, the middleweight champion became the heawyweight champion after 106 years. I apologize for the sync, I could'n find another video. 12:30... This content is protected
No. Roy had talent / athleticism. Hopkins is PURE skill, as in he typically doesn't have the advantage in speed / power / reflex, but he beats you with his mastery of the game. That's what skill is.
there can be an argument for Hopkins being greater. He beat better names.. regardless of handpicking.
No! Hopkins was an anti-Boxer, he had little skill relative to his contemporaries, what he did was spoil and generally make a mess of the fight, ugly boxing and brawling, which was shabby to watch.
They turned pro in the 80s, from an era prior. James Toney at his best is the best I’ve seen since the 80s.
No way, Hopkins was in my view never pound for pound number 1 and was in a weak era of Middleweight where he possible stayed too long. He not only was comfortable outboxed by Jones, who was in 4 divisions champion and was in Light-Heavyweight much greater, but he even draw with gatekeeper Mercado after that, didn't unify for 5 or 6 years, until the Don King tournament and his best win was against a career-welterweight. Jones fought more high rated opponents and dominated most of them by far. I rated Hopkins similar as Tszyu, maybe a little bit behind whom. He was always not just behind Jones, but also Mayweather, possible Barrera, Mosley and Pacquaio too. The only question/ discusion which is legit is about who was the greater middleweight, Jones or Hopkins. But think Golovkin achieved more than the later one in this division, he is the most overrated boxer of the first decade in this century, besides Paul Williams.
Hopkins. Great practitioner of the craft. Great skills and a much better resume. Jones had speed. Other than that he was very average as far as boxing skills are concerned. Once his speed left him he became a punching bag resume builder for many fighters including several B level ones.
