ATG's that suffered an early defeat like Khan

...........It's a different playing field now. The occasional loss never used to be a career-killer. Now, in the days when 30 fights seems a rather extended career, losses are far more magnified.

Many greats lost early, and badly. If they were truly great, they rebounded and made their mark anyway. Greatness isn't just about physical ability, it's about mental toughness and being able to set aside bad performances. Better still, they learn from them.


Now we'll REALLY see what Khan is made of.

Well he lost by TKO (in the 7th round), but he wasn't blasted away in 30 seconds.


Dempsey was similarly knocked out very early by Flynn, although some believe it was a fix. Schmeling has several first round knockout losses. Back in those days, it was a harder way up to the top though. I think a better question would be which modern ATG's had those kind of losses.

 

Joe bugner and pipino cuevas both got stopped on their debuts i think. Pat cowdell got stopped in the first by azumah.
However,these guys proved later on they were very tough and world class. I dont know about khan....

 

John Ruiz, blasted out by Tua in 19seconds, and went on to become the greatest heavyweight of all times!!!!!! And then theres the lesser Dempsey who was ko'd in 1 by a journeyman too. Pacman has too early KO losses too. Emile Griffith got smashed in the first and went on to be a 3weight champ

I think Prescott could go on to be a serious factor in the division, seen him previously he looked like a bit like Tito Trinidad, and a 5'11 lightweight that can can bang like that (and he can seriously wack) is some find

 

Joey Maxim was KO'd by Curtis 'The Hatchetman' Sheppard in one round in Maxim's 30th fight. It was the only time in his 115 fight career he was starched. AND.......21 days later he boxed the Hatchetman's ears off in a rematch. Now that is the heart of a fighter.

Khan got caught cold and walked into another barrage, he may be a slow starter, he can come back but to lose that way is tough...Benny Leonard lost eary on and Walker but these days they give you a few shots back at the big time, he will have to rebuild

 

18 fights in 3 years is still very little experience for a fighter. Amir has not learnt how to efficiently smooth over rough patches, instead he gets brave.

Whatever the analysis of Khans chin is, he met a crisis and did not know what to do with it because he is lacking layers to his game.

 

He'll never be an ATG, his chin is absolutely dreadful.
