Just seen a debate on whether GGG can become an ATG without having that win over an elite fighter. Got me thinking about ATGs who lack the elite wins and just have a bunch of good/very good wins. Tyson? Holmes? Tszyu? Any others?
man what ATG, prime and not at a catchweight, or in a weight class they don't belong, has Mayweather beaten?
hopkins and monzon could be argued. foreman? there should be quite a few as prime atg's dont always exist
mayweather is a great pick.Guys like Curry and Hamed aren't really consensus all-timer kind of fighters. Floyd's never even fought a very good prime boxer-puncher as far as i'm concerned.154 past prime Oscar and blown up Marquez being the closest.
Could you specify "elite." Ex. Floyd beat Corrales when he was considered one of the best in the sport, but Corrales wasn't good enough to be an ATG.
What is more common : ATGs with resumes that lack elite fighters , or ATGs with resumes that have elite fighters ?
Hopkins beat Trinidad and De La Hoya. Monzon beat Benvenuti and the smaller but elite Griffith and Napoles. Foreman beat Frazier and Norton. Ricardo Lopez? Joe Calzaghe or Rocky Marciano if you think that by the time he got guys they were cherry picks? Bob Foster? By the time he beat Tiger the man was 39 and had moved up two weight classes. Khaosai Galaxy? Is he an ATG? The word gets used so much it's hard to know exactly who it applies to.
oscar and tito weren't atg middles benvenuti fair enough can see that. frazier was not peak for foreman imo, too heavy for 1 thing, norton was the reason for the ? really. agree with the last para except calzage, given hopkins had some big wins after.
If the criteria boils down to beating elite fighters " who were also in their primes", then the list of men who " didn't" is vastly larger than that of the ones who "did."
Liston has Patterson. As for Dempsey, some old timers might make a case for Carpentier, Gibbons, or Sharkey being elite if not ATG themselves. Holyfield has Bowe, Tyson, old Holmes, old Dokes, old Thomas, old Foreman, Mercer, Moorer, and Ruiz. His resume is nothing but elite fighters. Lewis has Klitschko. Chavez beat Limon, Laporte, Mayweather, Taylor, Camacho which aren't ATGs but were still good fighters.
Holyfield and Ali are the only guys at heavyweight who have a big amount of elite fighters on their resume. Don't mean to be picky but I would exclude old Pinklon Thomas from that list, though. Foreman has Frazier, Norton and Moorer. Liston has Patterson twice, and Foley and Machen if they're to be considered elite at the time. Tyson has a fair amount of elite scalps.
