Athleticism in Boxing

    actually, jermain is one of the better athletes to take up boxing in a while. not rjj athletic but jermain is/was a helluva athlete. problem is, he relied on it too much and never kicked his amatuerish habits or worked on his stamina. he ate like a freshman in college and just relied on god given athleticism...which ultimately caught up with him.

    best athlete ive ever seen lace'em up is rjj. roy used to play semi-pro basketball for the gulf coast sun dogs (i believe this was the name of the team). we used to go to the civic center near where we live and watch him play. that mother ****er had the quickest first step ive ever seen and his reflexes are off the chart. it was a lot of fun to watch.

    thanks for all the replies.

    well besides the lack of stamina you could certainly say Jermain relied more on his natural abilities and is more athlete then boxer so to speak

    as IMO it badly caught up to him as he peaked IMO right around the 2 fights with B-Hop + Wink

    Rigondeaux is a good athlete. So are Lara and Ward.

    Some athletic attributes are:

    1. Cardiovascular / respiratory endurance – The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen.
    2. Stamina – The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy.
    3. Strength – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
    4. Flexibility – The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.
    5. Power – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.
    6. Speed – The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.
    7. Coordination – The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.
    8. Agility – The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.
    9. Balance – The ability to control the placement of the body’s center of gravity in relation to its support base.
    10. Accuracy – The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.
    11. NERVE: The ability to overcome fear and control your body’s stress response. Example: boxers and race car drivers.
    12. DURABILITY: The ability to withstand physical punishment over an extended period. Example: Boxers or football players (especially running backs)
    13. ANALYTIC APTITUDE: The ability to evaluate, reevaluated, and react appropriately to strategic situations. Example: Russell Wilson breaking down the defense before hiking the ball.









    Also reflexes / reactions: the speed at which one responds to an external stimuli appropriately (responding to a jab thrown with a parry).

    So any boxer who ranks highest in total out of all of those mentioned attributes is the most athletic.
    Very few boxers rank on or near the top of as many 'athletic' attributes as a prime Roy Jones Jr.

    Deontay Wilder would be pretty average or below average in many departments. He isn't very coordinated. His balance is poor. His accuracy is poor and so forth so on.

    You can use the list I provided to analyse for yourself how 'athletic' certain boxers are, relative to other boxers.
