The nicest hotel by a long shot is the Borgata, but it's not walking distance from Boardwalk Hall. Any of Caesar's, Tropicana and Ballys are close walking distance and about equally nice. Avoid any hotel that doesn't contain a casino - if you're trying to go cheap, you can stay for 1/3 of the price 10 miles away. Otherwise, you'll just end up someplace awful. Taj Mahal isn't a bad choice either. The other big one not within walking distance is Harrahs. Wouldn't do that either. Not a ton of difference between the rest of the hotels on the boardwalk other than one I can't remember the name of that is just full of old ladies. Resorts is the name not to go to.

Seen Vegas? Be prepared for a shittier version of Vegas.

As for places to stay, I have heard some good things about the Wyndam Skyline but I've never stayed there to verify.
