I see that Teddy Atlas claims ina few places that he won the New York Golden Gloves. He has friends or reporters saying it for years. When pressed, they have to admit he never even entered New York City Golden Gloves. Then it gets switched to 'The Adirondak Golden Gloves" My question: Anyone ever hear of The Adirondak Golden Gloves?? I had heard back in 1980's that Atlas only had one or two amateur fights, and quit when D'Amato entered him in NYC gloves as novice, with Atlas claiming back problem.
Yeah, turned out he had scoliosis, so he had to give it up.. He led Rooney through Golden Gloves i beleive though. Cus said he had one of the hardest right hands he'd seen though ;-)
My point was, the tournament does not or never had existed. It was just soemthing they came up with to explain his claim of winning New York Golden Gloves. "Oh, he meant the ADIRONDAK Golden Gloves."
In his book Atlas "From the streets to the ring" he states he won the Adirondacks Golden Gloves. Now the only references that I can find to this are all interviews or biogs of Teddy Atlas there are no other references on any search engine I've tried but who knows about his true record he is certainly lazy with the details himself and as much as I like him and respect his opinion it seems like he has painted himself as more of a prospect than what he was, but who are we to question his self belief. When did Cus mention his right hand BTW? was this during a personal conversation?:huh
I read his book a couple months back, he did make mention of winning a golden gloves tournament but he didnt specify what area he won it in. He was a better trainer than a boxer, even he will tell you that.
Hank ,in what literature does he state that he won NY Golden Gloves? I think i've heard it too and was sure it said Ny gloves in his book but when I checked it had this BS Adirondaks reference. It must be like the most regonal amatuer torney in the US!
His old friend, the late writer Jack Newfield, was first I saw say it, in New York Post. He said New York Golden Gloves, not Adirondak. For those in the staes, or New York area, when someone says New York and Golden Gloves, everyone knows the tournament they speak of--the one Breland, Bowe, Robinson, etc. competed in. It's deceptive to say you won new York gloves if you were not even in it. Rooney won in 1976 , as a novice, in welterweight division.
I am in Scotland but I know exactly what you mean the NY Gloves is a well respected event (less so now I believe) and I get the impression in his book Cus talks of the gloves that he won in the same way as the event Rooney won in. Why would he do this as it is so easliy highlighted is beyond me? I would never have questioned it as you take it for granted when a New Yorker talks of the Gloves he means THE Gloves. . .
Thanks for that answer, I was wondering how well tournemant was known outside of United States. Some fighters occasionally make trip from Great Britain, and a lot from Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico to compete in tourney. You are correct about 'THE gloves" :good
Hank on his anti-Teddy Atlas thing again. That's fine with me, I don't like Atlas either. He's annoying and it's amazing how overrated he is as a trainer due to an episode of HBO Legendary Nights.
