A guy I spoke to said he heared on the radio last night an interview with Teddy Atlas and he was talking about Aleksandr Povetkin. He was saying that one of the 1st things he did when he took over as trainer was that he organised a dark fight for him.

By this he meant that the opponent was paid, no head guards were used, fight-night gloves were worn and medical crew etc were on standby. It was basicaly an exhibition fight with no crowd. It was due to be a 12 rounder but AP stopped him in 3. Atlas wouldnt say who the opponent was but said it was a top 25 rated fighter.
Anyone can tell more about this and is it common to do those fights?

That's kind of a dumb idea.
If there's no crowd, no press, the opponent is not going to try to hard. All you are getting is an less safe sparring session.

Povetkin stopped a top 25 guy in three rounds...Povetkin is not a big puncher, I'm guessing what I said is what happened. Why take 12 rounds of pummeling if you get paid and no negative side effects from a loss?

Maybe getting paid and not taking the risk of a loss on his record? I don't know...

Supposedly Leonard did this again after the Camacho loss - he wanted to know for sure if he was as shot as that fight suggested, without risking another humiliation. He took another beating from this unknown opponent and any doubts as to his final retirement were erased.

Maske had 2 or 3 of those before the remach with Hill but then he was out of the ring for 10 years.

    You beat me to it.

Gerry Cooney did the same thing before he boxed Foreman, Cooney had employed Clancy as a trainer for the Foreman fight and i heard he batered a decent tall heavyweight as a warm up without headgear in prepairation for George.. The Opponent i did find out years later from the man himself , a guy called Wesley P Watson from Tennessee.. ( lost to Mercer & Dokes also ) around that time, a decent athlete for a warm up to be honest........

Well if it is true than it was a great measuring stick for what he has to work with. I'm going to guess the guy they fought was probably Alexander Dimintrenko, because it would answer the same questions for him as it would of for Povetkin and if he is getting paid minus the tv coverage, its a win for all involved.
