Has anyone brought up how Floyd supposedly beat the **** out of sweet pea when he was only a 16 year old kid?

 

These debates get a bit too emotional and biased for my tastes.

Both guys have done some amazing things whether you prefer one or the other.

Yes Pea had the better top opposition (Chavez,Ramirez) , but Mayweather faced a greater number of mid-high level talent overall. When I did a comparison of resume I was expecting there to be a huge gap, but Mayweather surprised me in a direct comparison with Pea.

Subjective favorites are fine and dandy but when your talking about probably the 2 best guys around lightweight than it really is just about as close to call as they come.

I've always leaned towards Pernell myself as I'm not a fan of FMJ but numbers don't lie and video evidence validates them both.

They did spar, but we have no way of knowing what happened without video footage. I've never seen anyone give a proper account of what happened either. There's just rumours, and Floyd himself didn't speak about it at length. It must have been interesting to watch that sparring session.

 

I don't know that I'd include Ramirez amongst Pea's five best wins. He was still a top lightweight, but getting pretty long in the tooth by that point though the utter domination is a fair factor. All of the top P4P guys Whitaker fought [Chavez, De La Hoya (very arguable), McGirt, Nelson, Trinidad (obviously a loss)] were either in or close enough to their primes for a win to be pretty significant. Vasquez has to be there as well as he was a naturally much bigger man and proven as one of the Top 2 Light Middleweights of the time with a damn respectable run as a belt holder.

 

A great titleholder but loses to elite boxers like Floyd mayweather Jr pretty badly too IMO.

 

Both Floyd and Zab did well against Pea in sparring. But it doesn't matter it is just Sparring. However, Zab got a lot of hype being the next Pea with a punch.

 

Whitaker clearly got heavily into cocaine after the Vasquez fight, and possibly before that.

 

In favor of Floyd ofc in terms of h2h ability

But in terms of resume, Pea is clearly ahead

 

Judah apparently handled himself better in sparring with Pea than Mayweather did.
