Audley has the good tools to be a decent fighter, over 85inch reach and 6 foot 5 and a half and coming off a gold medal, what was the reason for underachieving? I do remember Lennox said in an interview Audley was too busy trying to promote himself at the same time but it wouldn't just be that. I'm not from the UK but how was the reception for him in the early 2000's? Was he being hyped at the time as the next challenger?
Fraudley had it too easy I think. He found instant fame with the gold medal, got signed up to a big money TV contract to screen all his fights, was all over the place on TV shows, in music videos etc etc and the boxing seemed to be a secondary thought so in that respect Lennox is spot on. The reception was fairly good for him at the time as I remember, as you say on the face of it he looks like a potential contender, he's massive, got a long reach and had a gold medal to show... then he started his 'career' and he got found out as soon as he stepped up to decent domestic level and his heart and chin got questioned
He had solid support after the 2000 Olympics, got a deal with the BBC so was all set. But the public lost interest when he continued to fight a stream of bums, he didn't step up until his 17th fight and by then no-one cared
Audley never had time to worry about honing his boxing skills and was just obsessed with TV deals and promotional issues. You can do that later in your career but you need to focus on getting a world class trainer and team first. The first 20-25 fights a young fighter shouldn't worry about money too much. He needs to focus on developing himself. Money will come later once he's a complete fighter. Audley never reached that stage.
Not built for the professional game. He hated being hit. Noone likes being hit, obviously. But he really really disliked it, to the point where he stopped being able to engage properly. Hence why he froze on a lot of occasions and gave off the impression of being mentally weak.
Thanks for that one, So basically by the time he stepped up he'd already squandered his crucial time of making a mark? Maybe it would of been different with a world class trainer, I don't know, but it's disappointing for someone who was a SHW good medalist, looking at the Sydney 2000 olympics, Audley showed a lot more skill than some of the other guys fighting recently.
