Fletcher was a TV favorite during that time. The fight that stood out for me was against Green. Green was touted as an up and coming great fighter who employed a modern “scientific” training program. Fletcher was obviously old school. Green did great until he was cut and Fletcher took over and dominated for the KO. A fight that exemplified grit and determination over skills and conditioning. Fletcher could take it while Green could not.

Love the Green fight. Every October 16 THAT fight hits my dvd. You better believe it. It was the culmination of 3 yrs of climbing for Frank. 3 of my best in my life.

So you were around Philly at that time I gotta ask: did you catch any of David Love’s series of fights against Philadelphia middleweights?

I think he had quite a streak against them and finally James Green snapped it. But he was a West Coast guy (San Diego?) who just seemed to have some kind of edge over those Brotherly Love warriors.

    Any memories of that?

How was 1981 this time around, Morlocks? I love the way you have this annual pilgrimage to a fight you actually saw live and transport your whole self back in time.

I have talked about the 90s generation of middleweights as a golden era but reading some of the names in your posts makes me wonder how 1980-83 middles do vs 1992-5 lot. We probably think less of 80s middles as, apart from Hagler, they didn't win a belt but there was only one to win then. How unfairly does this cloud our judgement?

You were there so I'll trust your opinion. How do the likes of Frank, Ernie, Clint Jackson, Dwight Davison, Hard Rock Green, Scypion, Hamsho, Roldan do against the Jones Jrs, Toneys, McClellans, Jacksons, McCallums etc of the 90s. I know you've got fights to watch and drinks to be drunk but, if you feel like reminiscing and having a think about this, I'll be interested to read your thoughts.

Enjoy your trip down Memory Lane. All the best.

Thx. I appreciate that. Well they sure were more exciting if not as athletic. They came to rumble and bled and kept coming on. They would win some and lose some. The difference is that I still am watching the 80s late 70s guys fights and not the 90s. THAT is most important to me.

Answers my question, really. Late 70s/early 80s were an incredible few years. I can't believe boxing ever had it so good, neither before and certainly not since. Cheers Morlocks. Same time next year?

@The Morlocks: Pick a font, a color, a type size and tell me about it.

And I misremembered — it was Curtis Parker who stopped Love and ended his streak of feeding on those Philly cheesesteaks.
