https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hcuWSn6oVXg Chuvalo says to this day he'd have been victorious had the ref not ended the fight so soon
I don’t think Chuvalo was hurt so it could have gone on longer and become more competitive as the rounds went on, Foreman did not have great Stamina. Could have been a very good fight.
Those were some major league shots Chuvalo was eating in there. And he always claimed he'd have won the bout but lots of guys that lose say that stuff.
But George said it thru out his career...in spades! Anyone notice in round 3 Chuvalo backs up and tries to hide his head with his shoulder! IMO he wanted no more. Outside of the Quarry anamoly, he never knocked out any viable contender (spare me Doug Jones please). Always had excuses when he locked horns with top contenders/champions. A great guy and a tough out in any era but...please. My 0.02
George was a pretty good analyst, except for his own fights. Always said that "some people" thought he beat Ali in their 2nd fight. As far a Foreman, he probably could have continued, and who knows Foreman might have gassed and he could have won. We will never know
Given that chuvalo was never floored, let alone koed, its certainly possible he could have continued. However styles make fights and foreman was bullying him the whole time with his reach advantage and superior strength and power. Even if the ref didnt stop it early, his corner probably would. Chuvalo wasnt intelligently defending himself and could have gotten a concussion had it gone on another gruelling 10+ rounds with foreman simply battering him from pillar to post until they both get tired and it becomes an ugly mud fight with foreman winning a wide decision. Chuvalo would have been waaay too behind on the scorecards and he didnt have the late round 1 punch power to suddenly turn things around--nor had he built up enough damage to break foreman down. He simply wasnt winning that fight outside of foreman being sloppy and getting hit by something he didnt see coming.
From the looks of things, he may have been able to survive long enough to catch up with Foreman when he tired down the stretch. In retrospect, it may have actually been a good thing for Foreman had that happened. Sure, it would have cost him his undefeated record, but he was young enough to get back on track and Chuvalo was a hardened veteran, so no shame in losing. But Foreman's stamina and pacing issues may have been discovered and worked on, well before Zaire. Foreman could have reinvented his style and patched up his weaknesses well before winning the title, instead of waiting until the 11th hour like he did.
I’ve watched this fight many times and thecrefvstopped the fight to save his life. Chuvalo is full of **** on that one.
As mcvey said: He would have been dead. I didn't see a 'gassed' Foreman in round 3 but I did see a retreating Chuvalo wanting 'no mas'!
No one takes much more of that from young, prime Foreman. In one post fight but interview Foreman even says he was scared because f how hard he was hitting him. Young George never said that.
