    After a long delay I finally managed to put the finishing touches on the piece. Herrera was an excellent little fighter. I hope you all enjoy:

    Thanks Swarmer.

    It's a two-part piece:yikes. I figured if Springs can do an 8-parter then I should be allowed to get away with a two-parter, yes? ;)

    Surf- a great piece you have written about Aurelio Herrera, a sorely forgotten lightweight of the long ago past. I have read much about "the hardest hitting lightweight",from the older boxing writers of his time, such as Igoe, Dorgan, etc of the past, but nothing like your informative narration of Herrera, comes close to describing this iron-fisted product of Mexico and the old West.:good:good:good

    @Burt- Many thanks.:smoke

    After reading I hope it will become obvious how crazy it was for The Ring to leave Herrera off of it's "100 Greatest Punchers of All-Time" list.

    Superb peice of work.

    This is the kind of fighter whose significance gets eroded with time!

    Just finished the first part. If I weren't busy at the moment I'd have read through the entire thing. Great stuff, regardless, and I'll get on the rest later. It's always a treat to have such detailed accounts brought upon to fighters there is otherwise so little info on. Many thanks, Doug.:good

    Aurelio Herrera lays a claim as the grand-daddy of all the great Mexican fighters who have followed in his wake. Considering that Mexico seems to have become boxing's new fighter factory where techique is strict and emphasized (God bless them), this puncher deserves homage.

    Great work. Well worth the time and effort because it will stand as a point of reference for a long time.

    Much appreciated fellas. The more I look back at Herrera's career the more I see I guy who was like a miniature Earnie Shavers, but with an iron chin. I have an article from an old Ring mag where the author is comparing him with George "KO" Chaney. After comparing their various attributes the writer decided that they were close in power but that Herrera was the more formidable fighter due to his durability (Chaney had a shaky chin).

    Funny you should say that, because I made a sort of unofficial mission statement for myself along those lines a few years back when I started writing the Ever Hammer article. I made a list of fighters who were top contenders (even title claimants) in their day; fighters who had impressive achievements but were largely forgotten by today's boxing public.

    I've done Hammer, Ike Weir, Jeff Smith, Dave Holly, Eduardo Lausse and Aurelio Herrera so far. I'm doing Al Gainer next. I was able to scratch Jack Chase and Cocoa Kid off my list thanks to Springs and his excellent work. He will soon be doing Bert Lytell, who was near the top of my list of boxers to cover soon. I'm very happy that I'm not the only one doing this.

    Thank you for noticing. It's a rough research job. But exhuming these fighters and their careers is a very worthy cause, imho. It gives us all more perspective on our sport.
