The East European's blew him out, then he goes and beats our 'enry and pisses us Brits off. And despite his talent, which he actually showed in the (Joe) Frazier fight, he still is remembered for the Just glad to be here performances by most; is he respected by you Aussies?
He is somewhat a boxing icon down here. I cant really comment how people saw him back in the day but when boxing came up in the 90's Tszyu, Fenech and Bugner were usually who people knew.
He has my respect.I know him as the guy that fought alot of legends and even in losing efforts show class. He was unlucky that he was born in such a tough era.. If he were from this era he would of got himself atleast 1 world title.. Anyone know what he gets up to these days?? You think he would have enough cash in the bank to just sit back and relax??
I will probably sound like a dill but are you serious?? Only reason i ask is nothing would surprise me with former boxers.
Thought you were taking the ****... ... im sure the sausage maker will be coming to a asian dollar shop near us all very soon.
Bugner back in 87 was very popular in Australia, he started beating very good decent fighters with his speed and quality punch rate for a big old geezer.. he battered James Tillis then completely battered a still very good Greg Page before taking his show on the road and thinking he had a chance of fighting Mike Tyson.. Sad thing was many thought he had something.. Was he loved... Of course he was Australia loved Joe and i did too, a very good solid bad guy type of heavyweight.. fond memories...
i was just getting in2 boxing as a youngster when joe moved here and can remmember being pretty impressed that he went the distance with ali twice...
I agree...... boy i remember when when Frank Bruno did a number on him.....funny thing was i didn't know Joe was expat Pommy until i was older and heard his accent.
His accent always sounded Soth African to me... which ironically was about the only country he never fought under!
Joe's heart shone through against Bruno, he wouldn't go down. I always admired him for the Ali fights, he was never going to win but had a good go. I agree, a different era and Joe would have been a British world champ and an Aussie world champ, would have been one for the record books i think.
Joe always sounded South African, was touted as an Ex pat Pommey Englishman, and was an imported embraced Aussie.. Joe in fact is 100% Hungarian..... true..
Yes your correct. He is of hungarian decent who happened to prefer to fight/live out of england and later on the greatest country of them all AUSTRALIA.. He's a gold coast local these days the lucky *******. Pretty sure nowhere in the old dart or hungary comes close...
