He was totally, totally robbed against Moss O'Brien in the 1978 featherweight final at Wembley - a real political decision. O'Brien was the England man whom they wanted to go to Edmonton for the Commonwealth Games while Owens was just a nice boxer from Reading who happened to box O'Brien's ears off, but the establishment still shamelessly went for O'Brien. There was some hope that Owens might still get the nod for Edmonton, given the obvious miscarriage of justice, but they shafted him again. Owens went pro in disgust but lacked power over the longer distances and also proved prone to cuts. I cannot think of Austin Owens without thinking of injustice. I know someone who phoned Austin to tell him that O'Brien had got the Commonwealth Games berth. He told me that Owens excused himself and the caller could hear him sobbing in the background.
Bennie.. thank you very much for the post. I have a fight poster recently to hand featuring Frankie Lucas vs Tony Sibson with Austin Owens vs Kenny Matthews on the undercard..April 1979.. I wondered about Austin and his career... I dont know why... ? I really appreciate the response all the same. Cheers mate.
