Remember the tough guy, Charkey Ramon?? In 1973 he went and fought in Noumea against Jaques Kichichian.. the French hero.. Been trying to find that particular film for Charkey, which lead Haris Mores to seek out his New Caledonian contact Phillippe Goddard for any knowlege of it... As it turns out, Phillipe was in fact the promotor of the bout, doesnt have the film, but politely requsted a message to be passed on to Charkey.. "I'm sorry about the accomodation I put you in" **** me dead!! Must have been a rat infested dump if the promotor remembers it 36 years after the event!!!!!!!!
I heard a story about CHARKEY RAMON in noumea he was suppose to fighting EMILE GRIFFITH when the promoter switch the fighter at the last minute bringing in this mad mexican southpaw so CHARKEY refused to fight and black balled the fight and the fans went crazy and were about riot first RAMON was locked up then given a police escort to airport out of the country.
Charkey refused to fight?? Cookie, those words make me think twice about believing the story.... stranger things have happened though.. PM your email address and I'll post through some pics of the Kichichian bout..
Cute story, but I also doubt it's authenticity. Here's a good Q&A between Ray Wheatley and TROY WATERS: This content is protected
Of interest Fred Henneberry is buried in Narrandera cemetery. Wander into the Catholic section near the entry gates, and take the first lane to the right, and drive to the end of the cul de sac. The headstone is emerald green, as were Fred’s boxing trunks, in honor of his Irish heritage. and say hello if you are passing through the Riverina. Fred is buried with his wife Mary (Molly). Fred was my father.
