Don't know the actual reason but I can speculate that it's to do with money. If Foxtel offers a premium for the event beyond what promoters expect they would otherwise get through DAZN, presumably Foxtel gets the rights to show it. Joshua v Usyk was on DAZN in Australia & that event would have been a good litmus test of how much money could be generated for a boxing event through DAZN (in terms of new subscriptions). I think the problem DAZN has in Australia is that only hardcore types would have it & they would already have had it before Joshua v Usyk which would have meant that what should have been a money spinner generated nothing extra in revenue. If that was the case (and I'm only speculating that it was) we might see more Matchroom events returning to Foxtel. Alternatively, maybe Matchroom thought Joshua v Usyk could generate new DAZN subscriptions & were keen to keep it on that platform whereas they knew Liam Smith v Fowler wouldn't so were okay to sell it to Foxtel who have a self-interest in promoting Junior Middleweights. If Liam Smith shows up in Australia as an opponent for Tim Tszyu in the future, we'll know why they bought it.

I see your point but if thats DAZN strategy they may aswell pull out of Aus altogether if selling content to a local opposition platform. I think you are probably right though, foxtel paying to showcase Smith as a potential opponent for Tszyu. No easy night for Timmeh if it happens!

That is a amazing coup if it comes off. I would have never entertained this fight earlier in the year.

Big step up in class for Jai. He's definitely one of our best talents but he hasn't fought this year & looked severely underdone when he fought last year. Great that his injuries are healed but he needs some tune-ups if he's to be a realistic chance of winning. If he's fighting in January, he's not going to get them.

Opetaia clearly is a very big talent, but should be managed very carefully, otherwise his career will be in tatters. Activity above all, get him 3-4 fights before an eliminator. He'd get wrecked by Briedis if they fought any time before 2024, let alone this January.

Have a look at their respective records. One bloke is a world champ & has faced several world class opponents. His only loss is by MD against Uysk. Jai hasn't even faced the best fighters from this part of the world who are probably a notch or two below world class. Seeing our blokes get blown away when they step up to world class has been a common theme in Australian boxing for many years. It's going to be particularly hard to take this time around b/c Jai definitely has the talent to give a good account of himself with the right lead-in fights under his belt. Without them, we're looking at a Bilal Akkawy v John Ryder situation.

Exactly. Great comparison, and speaking of which - any news on a comeback for Akkawy?

None. Akkawy didn't have an amateur career so doesn't have quite the same pedigree or potential as Opetaia. Not sure we'll be seeing him again as a professional boxer. I'd assess Opetaia as one of our best three talents along with Junior Tszyu & Justis Huni. I guess the money on offer & the opportunity he's been waiting for his whole career (a world title shot) are going to be too hard to resist. Getting him the fights he needs to be a realistic chance of winning is presumably going to cost more money than people are willing to spend. Tough game this professional boxing. It will be a big event in Sydney in January though & the young bloke will get well paid for it so I guess we're going to have to be satisfied with that.

He's fighting very early December with the Breidis fight likely taking place late January.

I hope he's in with a good opponent, not another domestic club fighter. Put him in with David Light. At least he will go to the starting gate as the best from this part of the world currently.

David Light is out for the best part of 6 months with a very serious knee injury. Opetaia has been made mandatory by the IBF. In a perfect world he'd get a few fights a step up from what he's taken. But with Covid being covid, that's near impossible.

I hope they find an opponent who will give Jai 10 hard rounds. He's going to need that kind of preparation in order to do anything with Briedis. Your bloke, Jason Whateley, is the next best around. Don't think we'll be seeing him in the opposite corner though.
