Haven't read the main forum thread yet. I thought it was a good recovery from Tim from potential disaster.

This is why you go to America. To face higher quality opponents & adversity. It was no flash knockdown. He was sat on his backside & hurt.

Good recovery from that position. He threatened to take over completely in the middle rounds but isn't a great finisher & the fight was competitive through until the finish.

Good opponent, good fight & good win for Tim. I think he'll improve on that showing next time out.

I'd be looking at one more over there before taking on either Charlo or Castano. Someone like Tony Harrison or Sergio Garcia. I thought it was posted that they were fighting each other next?

Gausha hit him with too many right hands. If Charlo hits him with those, it's good night. But he will be a better fighter for that experience.

He’ll have to improve. I thought Tim fought the perfect fight against that opponent, and used his strength. On the one hand I want to say fantastic win, that’s world class. But on the other hand there were too many signs that make me think he is going to do less on the world stage than I did before the fight happened. He was unknown at this level before but now we can make a better evaluation.

He can’t simply use his physical strength and pressure to beat the best guys. Castano and Charlo would have both easily knocked him out based on that performance. Tim didn’t react well to punches, in the final round he was buzzed by left hooks. In the earlier rounds he got outboxed, Gausha was clearly the better boxer when he wasn’t covering up on the ropes and trying to go the distance. So we’ve seen that he can be hurt and outboxed from this fight, even though the consistent pressure got him the win in the end. He also seemed to struggle with transitioning from attack to defense, like he could only do one or the other. It made sense for him to just keep throwing against the shelled up opponent, but if he had a bit more counter punching and variation in attack/defense he could have walked Gausha onto something flush. He reminded me of Calzaghe honestly, just non stop moving forwards and overwhelming with will and volume. Tim seemed to recover well, but against a better puncher than Gausha?

He got a great win against his best opponent, in a fight that made me think less of him and his chances going forward.

 

I certainly never expected Tim to get things all his own way in this fight. It's not easy beating decent Americans in America. His start was about as bad as you can get but he recovered well I thought in the circumstances to get the win.

He was knocked down & hurt in the first round of his first fight in Australia against a live opponent so contrary to what's being reported, it's not the first time he's found himself in that position. He recovered well on that occasion to get a win also.

What you read into those kd's is really a matter of perspective. It's easy to take a negative view that being dropped & hurt is a sign of deficiency. That's the view I'd normally take. Particularly against guys who aren't big punchers. A positive is that in both of those fights he was able to recover & finish in front. I think there's a lot of merit in being buzzed early today and finishing in front over 12 hard fought rounds.

When interviewed on Australian tv Tim also stated that he's been crook with a viral infection while in the US. That being the case, his performance is all the more meritorious.

I think another good American opponent for him in America next up is the way to go. I reckon Tony Harrison or Erickson Lubin would be good tests for him. And yes, he would need to improve on today's showing in order to beat them. Having seen all of his professional fights to date, I'm pretty confident that he can.

As for Charlo & Castano, let's see who emerges with the belts & what they decide to do. I think it's in Tim's interests to get in another one before facing either of them.

 

He has a weird natural habit at times opening his hands apart leaving him wide open when a punch is thrown at him instead of closing the guard.
Also does it when he throws a right, his left hand strays away from his face leving him open and is what put him on his arse in the 1st from a right hand.
His defence/head movement need work. he is trying to do his dads style but Kostya had simple little head movements that avoided a lot of shots. Tim is eating the same shots and the top guys will put him to sleep if it isn't sorted.

 

I think they need to look at Tim's preparation for these overseas fights now that he's reaching the pointy end of the sport. They need to do better than just sparring with locals if he's doing the majority of his training camps out here. You don't just spar with locals for the majority of the lead up, then engage in gym wars at the Mayweather gym in the penultimate week before the fight when you should be winding down & then travel elsewhere in America to a completely different climate for the fight. That's not how Kostya used to do it.

If he's preparing here, they need to bring blokes out here for him to spar with. And yes, in order to get them out here, they need to pay them. Kostya would bring two or three blokes out here to spar with him in the lead-up to fights in America. You can't just rely on locals.

Terrell Gausha spent the lead-up to this fight sparring with Brian Castano & other notables. It showed in the first couple of rounds where Tim was clearly off the pace. A lot of thought needs to be put into who he's sparring with, when & where.

Gausha himself would be a good choice of sparring partner, particularly if Tim was facing a Tony Harrison or Charlo.

He should try and base himself in the US and get a US trainer. I have no idea of the logistics especially due to covid etc.

 

I'm actually quite stunned & angry that they've done a 10-week training camp & based themselves on the Gold Coast sparring locals for most of it.

That demonstrates a level of ignorance & incompetence that is beyond my comprehension. They've got literally millions of dollars rolling in & they couldn't arrange one world class sparring partner for him. Meanwhile his opponent is in camp with Brian Castano & other world class operators.

The people managing, promoting & training Junior Tszyu were not performing those functions for Kostya. Some are fond of highlighting the fact that they were a part of Kostya's team back in the day. What they leave out is that their roles then were very different to what they are now. For all the criticism Johnny Lewis cops, he knew how to line up world class sparring. Fights at the pointy end of the sport are won & lost on who the sparring partners are. His current trainer & manager (family & friend) apparently have no idea about that.

It's not just a matter of basing himself overseas for a training camp either. It's who you are sparring. A lot of thought needs to be put into it. Junior Tszyu was apparently going full tilt against a modestly credentialed Junior Welter at the Mayweather gym the week before the fight. The SMH correspondent who was embedded with Team Tszyu wrote articles about how Junior got the better of him. He was a modestly credentialed Junior Welter, ffs. Big deal. That's not who he should be sparring with in the lead up to the fight.

It's not just Timmy Tool Train who needs to improve before his next fight over there. His trainer & manager need to sort out some world class sparring partners for him & pay them accordingly. That's the case whether he's doing the majority of his training camp out here or over there.

There's a real skill in selecting sparring partners. Ideally, they need to be as fast & skilful as you can get & be just as strong or stronger than the guy you're fighting. Big punchers aren't needed. They pose an unnecessary injury risk. If you can't find a suitable sparring partner in your own weight division, go next division up. But make sure they're world class, not locals. Nothing against the Headsplitter, but in terms of where Tim is now, they need guys who are better credentialed. It's irresponsible sending Tim into battle with such a large discrepancy in terms of preparation. It's not a matter of training harder. Just be smarter.

If they're not prepared to sort that out for future fights, we're all wasting our time. Astonishing really that Junior turned that fight his way by half-time after being so far off the pace at the beginning of the fight. It shows the kid has plenty of talent to be able to adjust during the fight & take control of it in the way that he did. Let's see how he goes over there after a 10-week training camp featuring some world class sparring.

I mentioned Terrell Gausha as being a good sparring partner for either a Tony Harrison or Charlo preparation. Sergiy Derevyanchenko would be good for Castano.

 

Good call on Sergiy for a Castano fight, volume puncher who's title chasing days are pretty much done anyway.

 

Also Tims dad, Kostya was schooled from a single digit age in the old soviet boxing regime, so he was ready made when he got here. I still think Kostya would have been better if he based himself in the US with better training and better sparring. However you got to balance that with Kostya loving it here and being settled etc. Timmy learning still would be better off in the States.

 

I feel compelled to mention a few names. I don't like being critical of his training or management team b/c they've done a great job getting him to this point. But they need to do a better job of planning his preparation for fights, particularly in terms of sparring partners.

Give him equivalent sparring to the guys he's facing is all I'm saying. He clearly didn't have that for the Gausha fight & it showed. It's not even a matter of dotting i's & crossing t's. It's far more fundamental than that.
